Cannot find my Roon Nucleus on my network

I am no longer able to find my ROON Nucleus 1. It is connected to my Verizon Router via ethernet cable. I have a 1GB FIOS connection from Verizon.

The connection to the Nucleus worked well for months/years until something today was perhaps jogged slightly and since then it can no longer be found on my network. The MacBook Air which I use as Roon Remote can not see it although other things on the network remain active and visible.

I have switched everything on and off a few times - Verizon FIOS modem, Verizon Router, Roon Nucleus etc. I have also switched the whole power source to this section of the network on and off. Likewise the MacBook Air. But none of these things helped.

Have you checked in the admin page of your router to see if it is there and just getting a “new/different” IP address?

If there is an IP can you get to the WebUI?

Also, “Nucleus HDMI output displays a status screen that contains diagnostic info with IP address, build information, and server status.” so you might try connecting a monitor/TV and restart the Nucleus one to see if it is actually working?

Thanks for the help. I was able to get into the admin page of my router. Where should I look to find the IP Address of my Roon Nucleus? I don’t see anything there with the old IP address of the Nucleus that had been previously assigned which Roon is looking for. That seems to be missing. However the Nucleus is powered on with ethernet cable plugged in. And the light above the ethernet cable socket on the Nucleus was blinking white suggesting (to me at least) that a connection was being made. However, I am not able to see (or at least find) the Nucleus in the Verizon Admin tool as you suggested.

Also my Nucleus cannot be found via Apple Remote from my MacBook Air.

On the Verizon router’s webui It appears there should be a “devices” section. You can look there to see if the Nucleus is showing up and, if it is, see its IP address?

Are you able to hook up an HDMI to a tv or monitor to the nucleus to see its status?

The first thing I check is always “has the ethernet cable come loose at one end or the other”.

Thanks for reaching out. THe flashing Ethernet lights are a good sign, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that communication is working properly. Please connect the unit to a TV or Monitor and post a screenshot of what you see listed there, thank you!

Thanks @bearFNF I see two ethernet devices,and one has to be the Nucleus as the other is a switch that is visble in the newtork. But no IP addresses there.

By the way I also tried powering down and pulling the plug on both the Router and the Nucleus. Then plugging the Router back in first, waiting a few minutes until it was back online. And then plugging the Nucleus back in. But no luck with this either.

Thanks for the above info! Another small test - what happens if you use a different ethernet port on your primary router with your Nucleus?

As a next step, let’s reset the network settings on the Nucleus. Steps to follow below:

  1. Connect the Nucleus to a monitor or TV via HDMI.
  2. Connect a USB keyboard to the Nucleus.
  3. Power on the Nucleus and let it boot.
  4. Press ENTER
  5. Type resetnetwork
  6. Press ENTER

It didn’t help to use a different ethernet port.

On the other thing, I am looking to see if we still have a USB keyboard somewhere.

@benjamin I did find a USB keyboard. However, I was not able to connect after typing “resetnetwork”.
Here is a picture of what I am seeing on the monitor connected to Roon now

Also I believe I am seeing the Nucleus now with a 192.168… IP address in the Verizon Router admin app. So it seems like the issue may be that I need to reinstall the Roon OS or something? At least that is what ChatGPT is telling me. I believe I figured out how to do that from here: https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/roonos-recovery#Option_1_Windows__Mac_OS__Linux

Finally, since my Nucleus is the original version and perhaps 10 years old, would it be advisable to get a new one now? Could the underlying problem be a hardware/internal SSD aging problem?

I did try to reinstall the Roon OS by using the image at the link above and using Balena Etcher to copy the image. However, even after reinstalling the OS on my Nucleus, I got exactly the same message as above.

I have ordered a new Nucleus 1 to replace the current on. Does that sound like the right step?

Hi @Hasan_Latif,

Can you please share a screenshot of the current Nucleus Web Admin interface in a browser? It sounds like the router can allocate an IP address, but the Nucleus network interface itself isn’t registering with the BIOS.

Do you have any second routers in this setup? What about network security/anti-virus/firewalls?

If you feel it’s an appropriate time to upgrade the unit, a Nucleus One should perform marvelously at your library size. However, we do want to make certain there’s not an easily resolvable issue in the local network setup, too.

We’ll watch for your response.

Actually I am pleased to say that the problem has been resolved today. It seems the Verizon router was at fault and not the Nucleus. Verizon has replaced the router and the Nucleus is back up and running now.

I am not quite sure what to do now about my Nucleus purchase now - (i) return or (ii) stockpile or (iii) use the new one as primary and the current as backup. Stockpiling seems a bit extravagant. But using the new one as primary could be a good idea especially if there are any benefits.
