Describe the issue

I cannot install Roon on my synology ds215j as i only runs dsm 7.1.1

Describe your network setup

cabled network, ethernet cat7

The most recent version of DiskStation Manager (DSM) available for the Synology DS215j is DSM 7.0.1.

However, it’s worth noting that the DS215j, being an older model, has reached its end of support for further DSM updates beyond 7.0.1. Here’s a summary:

  • DSM 6.2.4 was the last major DSM version to fully support the DS215j.
  • DSM 7.0 and DSM 7.0.1 are supported on DS215j, but with limited new features compared to newer models.

As of Synology DSM 7.1.1, Roon Server is not officially supported by Synology. However, it is possible to run Roon Server on Synology NAS devices through unofficial methods. You could checkout the SynoCommunity as there maybe some packages available there which will allow roon server to work if your device is compatible.

So, there’s not an issue with Roon, unfortunately your Synology DS215j doesn’t support Roon and you need to run Roon server from a different device or try the SynoCommunity.

Adding to this: you’ll need a Synology with Intel CPU in order to run Roon:

The DS215j is equipped with an Marvell Armada CPU (lightweight ARM), making it a no-go regardless of DSM version. You’ll need to find different machine to run Roon, I’m afraid.

I don’t know if this reply was generated with ChatGPT or something similar, but Roon Server was never “officially supported” by Synology, regardless of the version of DSM. It is, however, officially supported by Roon itself on DSM 6 and 7 (all releases thereof), so long as you can install Roon on NAS, which, as @RBM points out, requires a model with an Intel-compatible CPU, and the DS215j is not one of those models.

You’re right there is some chatgpt & personal experience, I had a DS215j and couldn’t get Roon (in any guise) to work satisfactorily and resorted to a pc. I know others have had some success but life is too short and listening is more important.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, the easiest way to know if Roon on NAS will work is to focus on these series. Most models with an Intel compatible chip have “plus” or “+” in the series, although the non-plus XS models will work as well. The checked series themselves are all compatible:

Hi @MICHELE_PRESENTI,

Unfortunately, @RBM is correct. You’ll need to install RoonServer on a compatible machine. Please see the resources other users have helpfully provided above.
