Noris, how do I rip cds directly into the nucleus? If I get a CD player, such as an apple ,with a usb output, can I connect it directly to the nucleus?
I have downloaded ND tracks download manager to my iMac. How do I get the downloaded music from my Mac to the nucleus?
I don’t think your screen shot shows what you think it shows, but I’ll take your word for it that you have mapped the Nucleus internal hard drive for music storage.
You shouldn’t delete the folders on your Mac if they still have files you want to keep. Assuming you had music stored on the Mac when it was the core, simply copy the folders over to the internal storage on your Nucleus.
The Nucleus doesn’t store files streamed from Tidal. The only information concerning these files is metadata stored in the Roon database which contains info related to music you have added to your library from Tidal. The Tidal album in your library isn’t linked to files stored locally, it’s linked to the files stored on Tidal’s servers. The database is in the Nucleus but on a separate drive from music files.
If you’ve mapped your Nucleus music storage folder, simply create a subfolder for HDTracks. Then in your HDTracks download app assign the download location to that folder. When you purchase music it will be downloaded right to the Nucleus and Roon will add it to your library complete with metadata.
The Roon database is automatically backed up to the location of your choice. Go to Settings>Backups>Find Backups. Most of us use a thumb drive or an external USB drive plugged into the Nucleus. You can also back up the library to Dropbox. To back up the music files, I use a USB drive plugged into my desktop PC to mirror the files. I use a program called ViceVersa Pro to maintain an exact duplicate of the files on my Nucleus and the USB drive connected to my PC. Any backup software should be able to duplicate the music files on two separate drives.
David, Thanks for your prompt reply to my questions. I’ll reply to your message below using the same numbering system that you used in your message to me. I should add that I have been using roon as a core on my iMac for over a year but purchased the Nucleus on the strength of representations that the streaming from Tidal will be better from a sound quality standpoint. I brought the internal storage thinking that I could store, and thus better protect the tidal music files. now I learn that I can’t use the internal storage for tidal.
1I sent you a photo of the screenshot via a separate email…I don’t know what “mapped” means. How do I map nucleus for internal storage?2.
2. Yes I do have some music files on the Mac that I would like to copy over to the internal storage on the Nucleus. How do I do this?
3.i tried to copy a tidal music file to the internal storage of Nucleus (by clicking and dragging) but it wouldn’t work. Now I know why.
4.How do I map my Nucleus storage folder? How do I create a subfolder for HD tracks.
5. I used a usb external drive for my backup of the Mac and connected it to the nucleus for transferring the music to the nucleus. Now that the transfer is complete(and it is still connected to the nucleus) how do I tell it to backup the nucleus music files.
Thanks for all of your patience and I look forward to receiving your reply.
Warren
With the usb external hard drive still connect to the nucleus, I tried to back up the music on Nucleus by going to settings and backup. Got an error message stating “backup directry not available.”
David thank you for your message and I apologize for so many questions.
I sent a reply to your message late yesterday and got some gobbledygook from Roon support website indicating that I was in the wrong group or something to that effect. So this message is just a test to see if you get it - please let me know and then I will reply to your reply with my questions. If this doesn’t work I would like to set up a one on one dialogue with you without interference from the roon support website. Please let me know how to do this
Warren, I’m just a user like you. I don’t work for Roon. But I have had a Nucleus for quite some time and I can give you the benefit of my experience. First thing, check out the Roon Knowledge Base (https://kb.roonlabs.com/). The answers to all your questions are in there.
Second, do you have music available now? It looks like your music folders (other than Nucleus Internal Storage) are unavailable, and it looks like there’s nothing in Nucleus Internal Storage. If you look through the KB, there’s a section in the Nucleus Manual that explains how to create a shared folder. I don’t use a Mac, but on Windows, it’s a simple matter to right click on the PC located on your network, select Map Network Drive, then paste in the location address provided in the Nucleus KB (smb://NUCLEUS/Data/Storage/InternalStorage). If I’m wrong, please someone chime in to help. Once you have the Internal Storage mapped to your network, you can drag and drop or copy and past to this location and the Nucleus will then be able to access your music files.
It sounds like you’re confusing your Roon Database with the actual music files. They’re stored in separate locations and require different backup techniques. Roon provides automated backup of the Database under Settings>Backups. The Database contains links to all the metadata for your albums; album covers, artist photos, reviews, etc. This process does not backup your music files. To backup your music files, you can use any normal backup software from another PC located on your network. Simply backup the Nucleus Internal Storage folder that you mapped to your network to any location you like. As I said, I use an external USB drive attached to my desktop PC.
David thank you so much for taking the time to communicate with me regarding my nucleus. I would like to explain everything to you And answer your questions but I am concerned about my messages bouncing in the Roon community set up. Could you please send me your email address so we can communicate via regular email. My email address is (email removed by support) and I will reply. Thanks again
It looks like this thread got auto-closed, but I am not sure if the issues are fixed, are you having any further difficulties? To address some of your questions what were un-answered of not clear:
Yes, you can use the external USB hard drive as a backup destination, we actually suggest this as keeping backups on the Nucleus Internal Storage is not suggested.
You still need to use the iMac to facilitate the transfer of the music and you would need to access the Nucleus internal storage through Mac’s Connect to Server feature. More information in the Nucleus Knowledge Base Documentation.
Once you have accessed the internal storage of the Nucleus using Connect to Server, you can create a new sub-folder there.
TIDAL content is not stored on the Nucleus, you can’t download TIDAL files to the internal storage, they will be streamed from TIDAL servers.
The music files can be accessed by connecting to the Nucleus via Connect to Server. As for backing up the music files, you might want to connect a large hard drive to it and Export the media files to that hard drive.
It looks like you restored the backup to the Nucleus but you haven’t updated your storage locations yet. I don’t see any local music files on the Nucleus Internal Storage as per this screenshot.
If you wish to keep the music files on the Mac the Nucleus would only be able to access them if the Mac is online (You can find a guide on how to do this if this here is what you want, but I would suggest copying the music files directly to the Internal Storage of the Nucleus).
Any other question you may have @warren_kice, just let me know and I can assist further in this thread. Thanks!
Thanks very much for your message. The only issue I have left Using nucleus as my core for the Roon database is back ups. I went to scheduled back ups, view of and went through all the procedures for backup and I get the following error message. “back up failed -back up directory not available” Can you help me on this, bearing in mind that you previously suggested I use my USB hard drive as a back up source. But I don’t know how to set it up
Glad to hear that the additional issues have been resolved!
How was the USB drive formatted?
If you have formatted the drive as a MacOS “Journaled” file system, this drive would be “read-only” on RoonOS systems such as Nucleus, please see Nucleus Media Storage Knowledge Base.
We suggest formatting the drive as exFAT for compatibility with both Nucleus and MacOS, you can use Mac’s Disk Utility to re-format the drive, but do keep in mind that this will erase any contents on the drive, so be sure to make a backup of anything you need from it first.
Noris, I also have been having trouble with the backup directory after switching from Mac to nucleus as my core. When I go to “backups” and “scheduled back ups “ three paths are listed I but they all say
“back up failed - backup directory not available”
How do I cteate another back up directory that works?
Bingo! It worked. Nucleus is now set up for backup. Thanks so much.
One other problem. I am noticing a lot of songs in my playlists now have a “unavailable” notice above the song title. I tried to power cycle the nucleus and it didn’t help. Can you give me some advice on this please?
Now that I’m all set up with nucleus what is the role of the iMac. I know I can use it to transfer music to the internal storage of the nucleus but what about the Roon database on the iMac?
Are theses local playlists or TIDAL/Qobuz playlists? Can you please share a screenshot of a few examples (of the entire Roon window that shows this playlist)?
The iMac can control the Nucleus, and any devices connected to the iMac can also still be used with Roon. The Roon database from your iMac now lives in the Nucleus, that was the function of the backup + restore process you did with the USB drive.
