Category choice menu option not showing for some users when creating new topics

For some time, I noticed an unusually high number of topics being created in Uncategorized, causing a lot of work moving new topics to better places. I had no explanation until seeing that some users are reporting that the category menu is missing in certain browsers:

This was reported for Firefox and Brave, while Edge and Safari are working:

I guess this is a Discourse bug, will have a look in their bug database.

I can’t find anything in Bug - Discourse Meta

I looked into this, too, and I couldn’t replicate with Firefox, Brave and Vivaldi.

Thanks. Strange when others clearly have a missing menu, there must be some reason for them.

And also the recent (for a few weeks) rather sudden high numbers of new Uncategorized topics, or so it appears to me - they aren’t all new forumers.

I have now tried Safari, but same problem as with Brave:

OK, then it’s clearly not browser-dependent but something else. The question is what would do such a weird thing  I can’t find any related option in the forum settings either (such as automatically defaulting to a specific category, which is the only such possibility I can think of).

I wonder if it is connected to Discourse’s Trust levels?

I’ve also tried Safari on my iPhone, but still no category choice menu whether it’s over wifi or 5G. So it’s not the PC (Macbook) or the router/network.

AE67 and Hans are both „member“ (not regular) but have been around for years and have several hours recent read time. Trust level seems the best guess but surely „members“ with a long membership should be allowed to post in the correct category and not land in Uncategorized (with I suppose would be the result), crediting move work for mods and regulars?

Can’t find anything related in the detailed TL reference:

Except that TL3 (regular) can „Edit Topics (title, category, and tags)“ and TL2 (member) can’t, but surely this applies only to existing topics created by others?

I figure TL2 (member) is the majority of users as reaching TL3 requires quite a commitment and it can be lost if you don’t continually keep up with these requirements, surely most longstanding members, i.e. TL2 (and arguably T1, possibly T0) should be able to choose the category for topics they create themselves?

:waving_hand: Hey all,

Thank you for opening up a conversation about the creation of posts on the community forum and thanks to @Geoff_Coupe for mentioning it in Slack :folded_hands:

After a short conversation, it seems this might be an unintended effect of restricting moving posts to Support from other categories that took effect on March 18th. Here’s my message about that (slightly later on): https://community.roonlabs.com/t/moving-topic-to-support/313666/25?u=beka

Since it sounds like managing the Uncategorized threads is asking for so much time and attention, I’ve asked our engineers to roll back this change. I will follow up here once that is done (the developer is out of office today).

If anyone is of a different opinion, please, let me know

I have no opinion on whether the „moving to Support restriction“ or the availability of the menu is preferable on balance. I’m just glad that there is an explanation because I kept wondering whether everyone had gone mad

I think the moral of the story is that, once the change has been rolled back, we don’t move posts into Support, but request posters to open a support request…

Thank you. The category choice menu is back now for me.

:waving_hand: Hi everyone,

I wanted to confirm that as of yesterday (April 28, 2026) the change that caused topics to end up in the “Uncategorized” section, generating even more topic management, has now been rolled back.

Thank you for the openness in discussing this topic and giving us the opportunity to get things back to normal

@beka may still not be fixed at least not for every “member”:

Could be browser caching. I’ve seen a couple or so today, but not the usual numbers.
