Change Volume Without Foregrounding Roon App on Mac?

I use Roon’s software volume control for one zone. When I’m playing that zone from my Macbook as the controller, Roon is full-screened on its own virtual desktop. To change the volume, then, I have to swipe over to the Roon desktop, hit Command-plus or -minus, and then swipe back. Even if Roon were on the main desktop, I’d still have to Command-tab to Roon, change the volume, and Command-tab back. Annoying–especially since I can use the Mac’s media keys to play/pause and change tracks, just not to change the volume.

As a feature request, I’d like to use the Macbook’s volume keys to control the volume of the currently controlled zone when the Roon app is running–i.e., take over the volume keys along with the media keys–but have no idea whether that is something Apple permits.

But I would be equally happy with any scriptable way of raising or lowering the volume–via the command line, Apple Events, (easily composable) HTTP request to the Roon core, etc.–so that I can map it to a systemwide macro/keyboard shortcut. Has anyone figured this out?

Slightly off topic, but it would be great to be able to change volume with the physical buttons on iPhone too.
