Chromecast intermittently skipping tracks during playback (ref#18Q97N) [Ticket In]

Describe the issue

Chromecast skipping tracks

Describe your network setup

Virgin media gigabit router, connected directly to Roon server

Roon server is
Intel NUC 8 (NUC8i7BEH)
i7- CPU
16GB RAM
256GB M.2 NVME

I purchased two Chromecast second generation and have the same issue on both. When shuffling my tracks (local and tidal) there is intermittent skipping of tracks ( various sample rates). If I shuffle just my local tracks, there is no issue. I have altered resync delay to 1500 ms and disabled DSP functions. I have also restarted all equipment and logged out of Tidal and back in.

Hello @Trevor_Penny

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

Hi Vadim,
Thank you for the quick response. I have just recreated the issue, which occurred at 13:25. One track was skipped (the previous and next track along with the skipped track

all on Tidal), see attached <div 1">

screenshot. This occurred on zone Living Room TV. I hope this is the information that you require.

Kind regards
Trevor

Describe the issue

Chromecast devices are not playing music. I tried using your regular form, but it kept pointing to enabling the device in Roon, which is not my problem. My devices are seen by Roon. When I try to play music on them I here the "ding" of when a device connects to Chromecast but the songs never play. roon run through multiple songs and then gives up du to too many playback failures

Describe your network setup

Unifi network (UniFi OS 4.3.9, Network 9.5.21) with two 2.5Gbps switches and two U7 Pro. Controller is Cloud Gateway Max. Chromecast devices are connected using Wifi 5 and all devices are on the same subnet

I reproduced this issue at 9:25 EST

Hey @Trevor_Penny,

Thanks for sharing the above timestamp! We were able to review a fresh diagnostic report and saw a handful of errors that correspond with a known Chromecast-related issue our development team is already aware of and has a ticket in for additional analysis.

We don’t have any immediate next steps for you to test, unfortunately, but we’ll keep you freshly updated as soon as new information is shared with us.

Thanks for your patience here!

Hey @Trevor_Penny,

I spoke too soon - could you please fully reboot Roon Server twice, and then reproduce the issue and share the track name again? Our development team has enabled additional diagnostics that should give them further insight into the issue.

Thank you! :raising_hands:

Good morning Benjamin,
I followed your instructions and the first skipped track (in fact 2 tracks skipped) was at approximately 7:32. I have attached a screenshot.

Hi @Alexandre_Sagala,

It looks like you have a few different servers active - can you specify which server machine is your primary server, and which server you reproduced the issue on?

Thank you!

You have my utmost apologies @Trevor_Penny - it seems our diagnostic tool wasn’t able to capture the specific time around the timestamp you’ve shared above.

Could you please reproduce the issue once more, and we’ll do our best to capture what might be going on behind the scenes. Thank you!

The HomeNAS one.

No problem Benjamin, I rebooted the server twice and started shuffling my playlist. One track was skipped at 19:24, see attached image

You have my apoloigies @Alexandre_Sagala we’re having a difficult time enabling diagnostics on your HomNAS Roon Server, could you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Wonderful, thank you @Trevor_Penny - we’ve captured what we were looking for and have shared it with our development team.

What we did notice is that the specific track was being converted AAC to FLAC, and was then hit with a 404.

Does this issue occur if you avoid upsampling?

In the meantime, we’ll wait to hear from them in terms of next steps and any additional information.

Thank you!

Hi Benjamin,
Thank you for the update. All my local music is AAC and I do not get the issue when I play just local music. It only occurs when playing a mixture of local and Tidal streaming. I also have a Cambridge MXN10 and WIIM pro and do not have the same issue with those devices. It only occurs with the Chromecast devices.
Many thanks
Trevor

Very helpful information to know, thank you @Trevor_Penny.

Another follow-up test for you - if you set a sample rate conversion to force all resolution formats to 44.1kHz, do you still run into the issue?

To do this, enable sample rate conversion > select ‘custom’ and manually set each resolution type to convert to 44.1:

Let me know if that changes any of the behavior. Thank you! :raising_hands:

Logs are uploaded as requested

Hi Benjamin,
How do I get to these settings. I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find them,

Regards
Trevor

Hi Benjamin, ignore my last message, I have discovered the settings, will update you when I’ve tested.

Thanks
Trevor
