Community Remote for Linux, first native Linux GUI (v0.2.0)

Very good idea.

If I search for Astradyne (a track by Ultravox) in the Track menu it finds several versions of the song. However when I click on it, the track doesn’t get added to the queue and won’t play. Also clicking on the dots menu next to the track doesn’t work.

When I search for Ultravox as artist or Vienna as the album I am able to add Astradyne to the queue by just clicking on the song. Also clicking on the dots menu next to the track works and options up several options.

I can reproduce, and will investigate.
Thanks for reporting!

In the new version (0.0.8) the app freezes completely if I try to use the search bar. I have to kill the app and restart it. This problem did not occur in the previous version.

I have a similar problem, but I am not able to search at all. But if I chose an album from the album list, I cant play it if I click “Play Album” above the tracklist. Nothing happens.

Can you share the log file after this happened and you killed the app? You find the log file in:
~/.var/app/com.theappgineer.community_remote/data/community_remote/messages.log

Community Remote version 0.0.9 is now available

This time no new features but a bug fix / polishing release, taking care of some recently reported issues.

Tracks found as part of a search now have the action menu populated and can be queued / played.

The outputs list is now sorted. Also the options to remove all outputs from the whitelist, or to initialize the whitelist with a single output, are added.

Shout-out to @SandsOfArrakis and @Dirk-Pitt for reporting these issues.

Note: When updating the Flatpak the latest 24.8 run-time will be downloaded as part of the update.

I’m not at home, I’ll test this new version when I get back.

First and foremost, thank you for this app! I have it running on Kubuntu 22.04 and I can stream through both my PC speakers and a SONOS port connected to other speakers in my office.

In case it helps anyone else, because my PC firewall is on, I had to manually configure my ROON Core and the port and, as others have mentioned, I got that info from a different ROON remote on the Displays setting screen.

Two questions:
If I donate via the “Donate” button on Flathub, does that money go to you?

Second, are there any plans for a dedicated “Now Playing” screen in the Linux app? A dedicated “Now Playing” screen (maybe with the playque) would be welcome.

Yes it does, it brings you to my Buy Me a Coffee page that I use for all my extensions.

Basic form of this already exists but only for small window size, I will make this also available for larger window size. For the moment you get to it by reducing window width till you get the compact Now Playing bar, then click the Now Playing text.

Actually that works for me! Most of the time I want a small window. If you make a larger “now playing” screen, maybe off the ability to see both “now playing” and the play queue (or at least the next few songs coming up in the queue).

Thank you for the guidance as that was NOT obvious! :grinning:

Thank you!

Hi @CharlieC,

Thanks for your donation!

For the “now playing” update I plan on adding Wikipedia info to it, and also have this available for Artists and Albums in the library browser.

For this to really happen I should at least get it reasonably working for mainstream artists and albums. The search results will not be perfect.

Here is a screenshot of the current state:

Terrific app and extension - allowed me to get rid of my last windows machine and install Linux and the Community Remote - works great with Linux Mint 22

Community Remote version 0.0.10 is now available

This release brings Wikipedia artist and album information to the Browser and Now Playing screen.

A Now Playing screen was already available for the small phone layout but it is now also available for the wide tablet / desktop layout. You get to it by clicking the now playing info in the bottom bar of the screen.

Apart from the album art you can also read about the currently playing album and artist. The information is coming from Wikipedia.

The Wikipedia information is also available when browsing an artist or album. The browser has an “About” entry that shows the found information. From here you can start playing the artist or album by clicking the three vertical dots that opens the action menu.

The current Wikipedia search comes with a few limitations:

  • Only the English Wikipedia is searched (https://en.wikipedia.org/)
  • Local / non-mainstream artists and albums might not be found
  • Greatest hits / compilation albums might not be found

A basic cache has been implemented, meaning that a first search can take up to 5 seconds but opening it again will be much quicker.

Let me know how well (or not) this works for you. Till now it has only been tested against my local library, so I’m sure there will be room for improvement.

Finally some screenshot to give an impression of the feature:

The Wikipedia search works well for both Tidal and local files. Is there a way to toggle out of the now playing screen back to the main screen?

Hi @Jan_Koudijs,

Nice update to the Now Playing screen with Wikipedia. A bit of feedback, because it makes a mistake on retrieving the right album. It finds information with the correct album name but from the wrong artist. It should be the album from Nils Lofgren.

Now playing is a full screen dialog, currently lacking a close button. On Linux and Windows the Esc key brings you back, on Android the Back button is used for this.

Main thing here is that the album is not on the English Wikipedia, so the search takes a best guess. For Live albums the same applies as for Greatest Hits, they tend to be generically named and therefor harder to correctly match.

As a general note: If the displayed artist or album is clearly incorrect it would be helpful to supply me the full artist and album name as shown in Roon and the matching page title on Wikipedia, the page title is in the url after the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ part. With this info I might be able to improve results.

The best results would be achieved by having a global community curated list but that might be out of reach for this project.

New: Community Remote User Manual

With Community Remote being in the alpha phase for 10 releases, I plan on moving to version 0.1.0 for the next release, to indicate the move of the project to the beta phase. So I thought this would be a good moment to provide some actual user documentation. The first version of this is available now and contains information that till now was scattered over the different release posts in this thread. The User Manual can be found on the project website:

Feedback about unclarities or missing information is very welcome!
