Concern about Version field limitations in Roon GUI (ref#HCJUMN)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I am a longtime Roon-user and immensely enjoying it. Over the years I have used the Version field in the GUI to add information about where I bought a ripped disc, (fragments of) reviews, other context (tip from so and so) etc. - as [to my knowledge] there is no other free-text field available.
It would be a great loss to me if this information disappears (say by limiting the field-length or changing it altogether) - is there anything I can do to prevent this, apart from my regular back-ups.
NOTE: with 15.500 albums this has been a great and serious investment in time and a great asset to me of the role ROON plays in my 'music ecosystem'. I would like to try to adress this issue now, rather than unexpectedly be confontred with it in the future. Thanks very much for your attention to this!

Hello @voogtconsult

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

Would you kindly clarify whether you are you refering to the Version field in the album edit view?

Indeed, this is the field I was referring to. Thank you!

You can, as noted, back the database up. However, if Roon changes the actual field size (as in shortening it and thus truncated the version field data) then there is nothing you can do.

You can export to excel and I think that includes the version field information to have a reference, just in case you needed to re-enter anything.

I use it a lot as well, but, I’ve limited myself to using 25 characters or less.

Hi @voogtconsult,

@Rugby is correct in the above reply - was there something else or another issue you’re hoping to get help with? Or was this more just a question around potential future limitations?

Thank you!

Thank you kindly, @benjamin. I was happy to read the comment by @Rugby. I have now made an Excel copy of all my fields (including the extra information contained in the version-field). I am now a bit less concerned about the possilbe negative effects of future changes. As a (possible) reminder to your team of developers - a free text field in the Album edit review would be quite high on my list of ‘desiderata’, and I’m quite confident I’m not the only one… In that light - advance notices of future limitations would be highly appreciated!

Hello @voogtconsult

Thanks for the feedback here. Since this is not a current feature of Roon, I would recommend also posting your suggestion in the Feature Suggestions section of the site.

Our product team and developers keep a close eye on that category, so that’s definitely the best place to propose a change like this and get feedback from the Community.

As a side option, that I use in case I have a lot of notes or comments on an album.

You can of course put all your notes in a PDF and include that PDF in the album folder. You can then click to view that PDF from inside Roon (note it will open a PDF Viewer).

I recently ripped an album. Added it to Roon, made a text file called Album_notes, saved as PDF. Put that PDF in the same folder as the Tracks.

Now when I go to that album in Roon, I see in the Information line, that the album has an associated PDF.

If I click that I get a pop up to choose the PDF (if there is more than one).

Clicking Open File will bring up a PDF viewer. Yes, there is already a Suggestion to have an embedded PDF Viewer to keep the experience completely in Roon.

Also, the presence of an additional PDF is a searchable feature in Focus, found under the Inspector heading. This would let you filter for albums that HAVE PDFs and if negated albums that don’t have PDFs associated.

Thanks much @Rugby - I do use pdf’s to ‘enrich’ many of my album folders - thanks for pointing out to me that this is also a filtering possibility in Inspector! This taught me that of my ca. 15K albums about a third has a pdf connected to the album!
