When I try to setup HQPlayer in Roon with localhost it doesn’t work.
localhost = the machine itself. If you have Roon and HQPlayer in different machines, then “localhost” pointing to the same machine of course doesn’t work. If you run HQPlayer on MacBook, you need to enter static IP of your MacBook to Roon when adding HQPlayer there. You can add multiple HQPlayer instances to Roon and switch between those as necessary too.
Please also check that firewall on the MacBook is not blocking incoming control connections from Roon, or firewall on the MacMini is not blocking incoming connections from HQPlayer.
At least MacBook would need to be configured with static IP, for example by static assignment by the router. Or fixed IP outside router’s DHCP range.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I created a picture of how I had set things up running NAA to get around the problem I have when I run roon & hqplayer locally on my Macbook, following these instructions - I hear no sound.
Yes, and my suggestion was to move HQPlayer to the MacBook instead of using NAA. This will reduce the amount of traffic going between these two devices (assuming you have Roon configured to send bit-perfect data to HQPlayer) and also increase amount of buffer the MacBook has so that it is less sensitive to traffic fluctuations between the two computers.
Also please keep convolution disabled for now.
So first please check that you have sound with standalone HQPlayer playing on the MacBook (no NAA). And then you can add Roon to the picture, by adding HQPlayer with the MacBook’s IP to Roon.
This way, step by step you at least know which change in the overall setup makes things break for you. Trying to get everything working in one step works many times, but if it doesn’t troubleshooting a more complex setup is also more complex than troubleshooting a simplified setup…
@jussi_laako, Ok, so I’ve followed the instructions:
- HQPlayer is running on my Macbook (NAA is not running) configured with convolution disabled, Backend: CoreAudio, outputting to my HDV 820
- I have configured HQPlayer in Roon Settings with the IP address of my Macbook
- Firewall on my Macbook is switched off
When I start playback I get the error: “Playback failed because Roon couldn’t connect to HQPlayer.”
I can successfully ping my Macbook’s IP address from both my Macbook & my Roon Server. The firewall is also disabled on my Roon server.
As Jussi suggested, can you get music and sound playing only HQPlayer (no Roon) ?
Drag a FLAC or WAV file into HQPlayer Desktop and play.
Does it play?
If yes, then we know it is a Roon related issue to focus on.
@dabassgoesboomboom Yes, I can
I have not been able to find any useful information about this error message. What Roon-related issue can there be here?
What IP address are you adding into Roon?
Using localhost?
In Roon you have “disable” all the sound devices showing in “Audio” page?
Cant have both Roon and HQP connected to same DAC at same time
It’s working & with convolution config too.
Thanks @dabassgoesboomboom and @jussi_laako
