Description of Issue

Hello,

I am using an ASUS RT-AX86U with newest merlin-wrt firmware and a TP-Link TL-SG1210MPE switch.
The Streamer is a Gustard R26.

I am facing a lot of drop outs during playback, even loud hissing noise once, skipping tracks etc.
Only rebooting the Gustard solves the problem until it occurs again.
I was using before an unmanaged Teltonika TSW100 switch, with the same issues.

Only when I plug the cable directly into the router there are no problems.

There must be a way how the TP-Link has to be set without buying directly another unmanaged switch as oftentimes suggested.

Thanks for your professional help.

@data2ooo, welcome to the Community. I don’t have experience with this switch, but this is a managed switch with Power-over-Ethernet on every port. definitely not in the recommended switch category from Roon. I understand it can work without PoE devices, but as it is a managed switch, it may be adding overhead or it is configured in a way that interferes with Roon.

Can you please provide more information or a diagram of how your home network is configured? What is hardwired to the RT-AX86, what is connected via WiFi, what is the switch connected to upstream and downstream, and how your Roon Core and endpoints are connected to the network?

What specifically did you mean by this:

What cable is this referring to?

This cable is referring to the connection from the Streamer to the Router.

I have several devices in my network, total of 65 wired and wireless. Everything works flawless.

Router → TP LINK switch → Gustard Roon bridge streamer.

PoE because there are also IP-CCTV’s in the network.

Yep, everything works flawlessly, except Roon. Go figure.

I would look into the QoS (which stands for Quality of Service, an oxymoron if I ever saw one) in the management pages and see if it has a default rate limit set. It also has Storm Control which may not like Roons needs. If you can turn the port that Roon is connected to into an Unmanaged/unmonitored/unlimited/etc. port that would be ideal.

Hey @data2ooo,

Thanks for your patience while we continue to work through each thread. Following up here, could you please share a screenshot of your signal path? Ideally, it’s the same path where you experience the issues you’ve described above.

Are you still running into connectivity issues?

Is this still the case?

I’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:

Hello Benjamin,

sorry for the late reply.
It was actually working fine until the other day.

Music is playing and then suddenly stops, I reboot the DAC, can still listen a few songs and skipping tracks is again the issue.

I have to add that I disabled the media library on the SSD and I’m mainly listening on TIDAL ( 99%) where these problems occur.

I do have another streamer in my household, a wiim mini which is playing just fine. I am using here Tidal connect and not ROON.

I have a Tidal family account, so different accounts are also used to stream simultaneously.

Would be good if you have any ideas to solve the issue of skipping tracks.

I tried almost everything.
In the asus router multicast routing is enabled.

with the switch I tried every possible combination, flow control, qos, etc.etc. , I replaced the switch with a “dumb” switch. Same issue.

Both, roon core and streamer have a fixed IP in the dhcp.

It is not an ISP modem issue, since I tried with my backup 5G router and the same issue persists.
Internet connection is on both routers stable.

The ping and jitter measured on the core and streamer are perfect with no loss at all.

The streamer is connected via media converter and fiberoptical cable, but I tried also with a Cat 5E cable, - same issue. I tried to use the RoonCore in over WiFi, same issue.

I always have to restart the DAC/STREAMER when it does not play anymore and it will play again for a undefined period of time…not more than an hour until it skips tracks again.

Help please…I am getting seriously grey hair!

It was actually working just fine after I changed some network settings on the MacPro 2013.
I tried also to use a Macbook Pro M1 as a core and have the same issues.

Asus firmware is the newest wrt merlin. I downgraded also to the previous wrt-merlin version and its also not working.

Hey @data2ooo,

Understandably so! You’ve done an excellent job in troubleshooting so far, I’m sorry to hear none of it has helped yet.

Could you please try disabling any features related to multicast (unless it’s something like “enable multicast over wifi”) or IGMP snooping in your router settings, and let me know if your issues persist?

Thanks for getting back Ben,

I tried this option,

  • disable multicast. - does not work
  • enable multicast , but disable fast leave - does not work either.

I using right now just Tidal Connect in the streamer with an unofficial firmware. Works fine.

I have two more weeks to figure out Roon, after that I have to cancel the membership.
Any other ideas?

Thanks for giving that a try @data2ooo,

Do you recall the network settings you changed on the MacBook? Did you mirror the settings over on the M1? We’ll continue to review your core diagnostics in the meantime.

Is this still the case when using the M1?

I changed at that time everything under Network settings - Hardware - to automatic.
I did the same on the M1.

No it is not anymore the case, even when I bypass the switch and plug the streamer cable and the roon core directly into the router I have skipping tracks.

Thanks for looking into the diagnostics.

Hi Robert,

there is a total of 65 permanently connected devices in the network. Half of it are wireless home automation devices.
I gave to the roon core and streamer fixed IP’s.

On the switch are also PoE CCTV’s. On this switch just two, but there are other CCTVs , 11 in total which are connected to other switches. I mainly use Teltonika tsw100 switches.
I tried also this unmanaged PoE switch and an direct router connection for the roon core and streamer without success.
In the network are 5 AP’s. I have a gigabit fiber connection coming from my ISP’s modem. Asus is a dual wan router. The other wan port is for the backup 5G router.
Everything works flawlessly except Roon.

I assume its a tiny setting in the Asus router…or it’s the Roon…

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hey @data2ooo,

Thanks for the follow-up.

  • Is there a pattern tied with the tracks that skip? Can you test out playing different file resolutions and let me know if there are specific resolutions that skip.

  • Are you able to test out connecting the Gustard DAC directly to your core via USB? Let me know if your issues persist when doing this.

Can you confirm you have an up-to-date version of Roon Bridge on the streamer?

Good morning Benjamin,

yesterday I connected the Gustard via USB and it was working fine.
I also changed the FW from the inofficial Tidal only to the inofficial Tidal and Roon firmware. It’s based on the newest 1.4 version which was previously installed.

To my surprise the streamer was playing all night long. Even after a scheduled router reboot in the middle of the night the streamer was still playing.

It is to suspect that the FW must have had a damage on the Gustard…?

For now everything is working fine.

Hello benjamin, I am writing you here since I got the same problem again. Have there been any Roon update changes since April 27th ?

Regards,

Hey @data2ooo,

Sorry to hear you’re running into dropout issues again! Lets refresh your RAATServer database as a next step. You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon Database
  • Stop RoonServer from running in Nucleus’s WebUI
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the RoonServer in the WebUI to generate a new RAATServer

I’ll be monitoring this thread for your reply. :+1:
