Every half hour or so I lose the connection to Roon Server. This has been happening for the last couple of weeks and possibly coincides with the last update (2.5.1 build 1534).
I am running Roon Server under Windows 10 on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. I am controlling Roon from another windows laptop or an android phone. My windows machines automatically download updates, as does my Android phone. This has been my setup for the last few years. I am streaming to a variety of devices including Roon Ready, Airplay and Chromecast. I have monitored the server machine when the problem occurs, and it shows CPU, Memory and Disk Usage all approaching 100%. The controlling device, firstly displays , “Waiting for your Roon server”, then displays “Uh oh, something’s not right,”, then displays a blank Roon screen asking me to select an audio zone. Eventually it recovers back to the screen before the problem occurred, but with the music stopped.
How large is your library? How many tracks are “unidentified”?
My library is 5991 tracks, all from Qobuz. I did also have a hard drive attached with additional tracks, but I have disabled that to see if that was causing a problem. I have tried running with the Qobuz connected and the Hard Drive disabled, and with Qobuz disconnected and the Hard Drive enabled, but neither made any difference.
I might only suggest that Surfaces and laptops in general are not optimized to be servers. They have aggressive power management profiles. You might look at the Power Mode options to see if you can set them to “Best Performance.”
Hello @Robin_Morgan ,
Can you please let us know the exact local time + date when you next notice this behavior occur? We’ve enabled diagnostics for your account and can review the logging to see if there are further clues once we recieve this timestamp, thanks!
Roon server is designed to run under Windows and this has been my setup for the last 5 years without problems
I have done some more investigation and found a large number of temporary files taking up space on the hard drive. I don’t know what the temporary files were but I have a feeling there was insufficient disk space for everything to run properly. I used Windows Storage function to delete the temporary files and restarted the computer. I have now been running Roon for the last couple of days for several hours at a time without any problems. I will monitor the temporary files if it happens again. In the meantime I have noticed there is an update available for Roon Server. I will install this. So maybe the problem will not happen again.
Hi @Robin_Morgan,
That’s great news! I’m glad you’re able to use Roon properly now. We’ll keep the thread open for now in case there are further issues. If everything is good for the next few days we’ll mark this thread as solved.
