Describe the issue

In the UK, I have changed broadband provider from EE to Sky. My new router is model SR203sUK. I have a simple set up of 1x raspberry pie endpoint and 2x (10-15 year old) Sonos boxes, all hard wired.

When I first connected the new Sky router, all endpoints were showing as white in the audio section of settings and I could control all zones from the main pc (which is acting as the roon core) using the mouse but I could not see the server from any device connected via wifi (phone, tablet) however these devices could access the Internet ok so they are clearly connected to wifi ok.

I have tried to fix the issue using Chat GPT and have changed Windows firewall settings on the roon apps (that are available to me) to make them both public and private. Now all endpoints are showing as greyed out. Roon cannot control any zone.

The sonos zones work ok when controlled via the sonos app on my phone.

I have tried restarting the roon core and the sonos boxes a few times without success. I have not tried restarting the raspberry pie endpoint.

Please can somebody help me reaccess these three audio zones and enable my phone and tablet to see the roon server? Thank you.

Describe your network setup

1x Sky router, 2x old Sonos devices hard wired, 1x raspberry pie endpoint also hard wired

A quick thought, as Roon staff are currently holidaying. After any router swap you must reboot/reconnect every single device on the network, so they can each take out a new IP lease in the correct subnet.

The fact that the Sonos app on WiFi can see the wired Sonos boxes suggests that the router is at least not blocking their inter-segment discovery traffic.

If the Roon server is on your Windows PC and a full network restart doesn’t help then the PC’s network interface does sound like a possible suspect: firewall and/or permissions.

Thank you, Giles. I really appreciate your post. I have switched off both Sonos boxes and restarted the PC containing the core to no avail. I perhaps should have not gone to Chat GPT and come here first, only I did solve a problem with set up of my NOS dac and it worked well then. Anyway, for the time being I can use Tidal Connect and wait for Thanksgiving festivities to pass. Thanks again.

Yes, ChatGPT is unreliable since its responses are formed from correct and incorrect information posted on the Internet.

@Giles_W’s suggesting is spot on. However, it’s not clear is you rebooted everything. So, please follow these steps.

  1. turn off every endpoint: Sonos and Raspberry Pi
  2. revert all firewall changes you made
  3. shutdown the Windows PC (your Roon Server)
  4. reboot the Sky router from the web interface
  5. start the Windows PC (if further restarts are required, complete these)
  6. turn on the endpoints

Thanks mjw. I’ll try that later today.

Hello @Christian_Bolton,

Thanks for the detailed breakdown of your setup — that helps a lot.

When a Core suddenly becomes invisible to Wi-Fi devices after switching to a new router, and wired endpoints also lose visibility (greyed out), it almost always points to multicast discovery being blocked by the new router.

Roon relies on multicast, broadcast, and IGMP for device discovery.
The Sky SR203/SR203sUK routers are known for occasionally blocking or filtering this traffic.

What to check on your Sky SR203 router

Please look for the following settings (different firmwares show different menus):

  1. IGMP Snooping → ON
  2. IGMP Proxy → ON (if available)
  3. Multicast / Broadcast Filtering → OFF
  4. UPnP → ON
  5. “Enable IPv6” → OFF (temporarily, for testing)
Some Sky firmwares break discovery over IPv6.

After saving changes, restart:

  • the router
  • your Roon Core
  • the Raspberry Pi endpoint
  • both Sonos units

The fact that:

  • Sonos works from the Sonos app
  • but Roon does not see Sonos or the Pi

…strongly suggests the Sky router is filtering the multicast discovery traffic that Roon requires.

Once IGMP Snooping and multicast support are enabled, your endpoints should return to white/available, and your Wi-Fi devices should once again detect the Core immediately.

If the issue still persists after enabling these options, let us know — we can then go deeper into diagnostics (Windows firewall rules, network isolation, or Sky’s “Wi-Fi isolation” mode).

Passing comment: In a router this typically means UPnP gateway control, which – unless one’s interested in port forwarding – is best left off. Occasionally it can also affect local UPnP discovery but IME that tends to be due to a firmware bug. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Vadim and Happy Thanksgiving!

I have actually got a lot of success following @mjw’s suggestions. Everything worked fine after that. I can see roon on my phone and can operate all endpoints from it and the main pc via mouse. I notice that all endpoints are still showing as greyed out in the Audio section.

I have made one further adjustment to the router and switched off IPv6 (see attached image). This doesn’t appear to make any difference. Everything works but all endpoints still show as greyed out. I cannot find any button to make any of the other changes you suggested.

Would it be best to turn IPv6 back on?

Actually, I think UPnP can be switched off. Should I switch off?

I’m not concerned about the greyed out status unless you tell me I should be!

Christian

Those endpoints aren’t greyed out. Grey means they’re enabled. Aren’t you able to select them as normal?

And best practice says UPnP should be disabled in the router unless you need on-demand inbound port forwarding.

Ah, ok. Thanks @Giles_W. My memory clearly doesn’t serve me well! I’ll disable UPnP. All is working fine. Thanks to all :folded_hands:
