Constant dropouts with the dreaded message: Tidal or Roon loading slowly, etc

Roon Core Machine

I use an Asus Notebook running Windows 10 64bytes

Networking Gear & Setup Details

Asus hardwired; wifi connection to Project Streambox S2 Ultra linked to audio device Singxer SU-6

Connected Audio Devices

Connection from Singxer to Holo May KTE over I2S or AES/EBU

Number of Tracks in Library

10900

Description of Issue

Dropouts with increasing frequency. Some tracks hardly begin and down goes the replay; in most cases the dropouts occur well into a track, as in a movement of a symphony

What does your processing speed indicate, when that happens?
See Roon’s knowledge base

The speed varies considerably over time and audio material. Observing the read-out I might see 81.8 as a track begins and then, as and when the dropout occurs, a vertiginous drop to, say, 13.5 or less.
On the ‘good’ days, the processing speed hovers at around 31-33.
The dropouts occur most often when I choose classical music, less often with other genres. And I have the impression that the time of day - more exactly evening - plays a role. Often the period between roughly 20h and 22h is especially plagued by the phenomenon.
I noe as well the occasional disappearance of the audio device: the message pops up “manage audio devices”. (Yesterday Roon simply shut down: I was required to select my core and login - that is new!)

Strange, that you observe such processing speed variations.
Is Roon identifying and analyzing new tracks in parallel, perhaps?
Anything else running while playing music, demanding processor resources?
Let’s see your signal path also, please!

EDIT:
Any number at or below 1.3 would cause dropping a track, usually…

WiFi might be too slow. Especially when playing hi-res material. Did you try using lower res?

Cheers, Joost

Hi Joost
Thanks for yours.
As I write I am listening to Schoenberg’s Verklaerte Nacht (original sextet version) and there is nary a glitch. Pitch perfect, no interruptions.
It is the case, however, that if and when I engage DSP and upsampling difficulties do ensue.

I think this means your notebook can’t handle the processing.

Possibly. The Asus has been in service for several years, only as Roon Core. Off and on the current difficulties have been present, but they have always subsided, as seems to be the case presently. There have recently been Windows updates/upgrades. One effect, that I just discovered, is the disappearance of my Tidal account on Roon (presently corrected). Would a Nautilus put an end to all this crying and nashing of teeth?
With every good wish

Another PC for your core might dismiss the problem of the laptop being too slow.

You could go for a Nucleus but an (second hand) Intel NUC with an Intel i7 processor with ROCK (Roon Optimized Core Kit) is also often used. You can look at the requirements here:

Hey @edward_swiderski,

Ben with the support team here! I wanted to check on the status of your issue and core device. Are you still running into dropouts when using DSP? If so, please recreate the issue and share the specific date/time of when the issue occurs.

I’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:

Hello Ben
Thank you for reaching out; much appreciated!
My streamer - Project Streambox Ultra S2 - has suffered a setback: the audio has fallen silent.
It has been sent for servicing and, if it pays, for repair. Since then I have been listening with the computer routed through the Singxer SU-6 to the Holo May KTE. I am surprised how good the SQ is (must be the Singxer). And … the dropouts have stopped, be it in DSP or in standard mode.
Could it be that the Project has been at fault, the cause of the dropouts, or the combination of the Project and the Singxer, perhaps overtaxing the Asus running Roon core?
Regards
E

Hey @edward_swiderski,

If your system is functioning properly outside of using the Project Streambox Ultra S2 then the issue does point at the S2.

I’ll be curious to see how things run when it is repaired. Let me know if you have any questions until then!

Hi Ben!
No fault was found with the Project. Streambox and Singxer have simply parted ways. The technological equivalent of human dramas!
The computer-Singxer combo works fine as does the Streambox-Holo May over USB (less rewarding SQ).
I am ordering Mano Ultra Mk III Farad streamer …

Hey @edward_swiderski,

Thanks for following up! It’s not clear from your reply if your issue is still experiencing audio dropout issues after getting your Project back. If yes, let me know a specific date and time where the issue occurs and we can take another closer look! :+1:

Hello Ben!
It appears that the solution is to resort to cable instead of wifi. More or less immaculate reception now. The Project-Singxer SU-6 divorce seems definitive, however. Listening from computer to Singxer works fine.
I have ordered another streamer: the Mano Ultra Mk III with Farad power supply.
NOW … I use this occasion to request help.

  1. An anomaly running my core - Asus notebook - prompted my decision to reset Windows.
  2. The upshot: I needed to recover Roon, and now there are problems
2.1. I restored the most recent backup, the icon is present…
2.2. I am constantly required to identify my core. When I choose ‘this PC’ (on which I am writing presently) the message comes that, it appears that I have changed my core, but should I want to continue on the previous one, click Go Back on the left upper side of the screen.
2.3. Doing so starts a goose chase: login-in (mail; password), and up comes the message described under 2.2. Time and again!
  3. What to do? Please help!

Ben … please disregard my plea for help. I managed to undo the conundrum, simply by deauthorizing the ‘new’ core …

Best regards
