Roon works fine and reliably for me when playing music, but not when I try to backup.
For the backup, an external HD is attached to the Nucleus USB port and when I start the backup process it seems OK for a while and then it loses connection the server.
I have tried to reboot the Nucleus just prior to backing up - same result. Also, it doesn’t seem to matter where I start the backup from - iPad, laptop attached to the same switch as the Nucleus, PC on the next floor.
Backup attempts always lead to losing connection with the server, but music always plays just fine.
Wait? How much time did you give Roon to finish the backup? How big is the database (amount of tracks and/or the size of a backup if known)? If you can give figures, some users with similar sizes may be able to chime in with their observed backup times.
PS: Isn’t the backup even showing a screen telling it is shutting down the Server for backup and you will loose connection?
It is not a question of waiting, the process loses contact with the Roon server and then the Üh Oh, something’s not right" message appears and contact will not re-establish. The Nucleus + holds some 6000 albums, 83000 tracks. There is no screen saying the server is shutting down and warning about losing connection, the connection is just lost and it’s Uh Oh.
Can you post a screenshot of your Nucleus’ web administration interface please?
Based on other threads, you’re likely running out of memory or storage space. A screenshot may help detecting a storage issue. In any case, official support may have to take a look at your Roon Server’s logs and you have to wait until your ticket reaches the top of their queue to get a response (on a work day).
If you let the BU run it’s course you will probably find that the actual BU has happened , it just that you can’t see it. Depending on your library size maybe wait 30 mins and it will “come back”
I run an auto BU at 14:00 which always works unless Roon is playing , if I “force” a BU from either my iPad or WIn10 PC I get a lost connection error BUT the BU completes properly and reports so.
I you think about the work is going on at the NUC , what the iPad sees is irrelevant , its job is to send a command to start.
Restarting the NUC will corrupt the BU as you may interrupt it part way
Mike, thanks! Tried it earlier today and it worked. Now I deleted the previous backups, because they are probably corrupted. This loss of contact with the server still appears strange to me - it has not always been that way - but the main thing is that the actual backup still happens. Great!
This behaviour is a pretty recent “feature” of Roon, and i see it as well.
You do see the first screen, saying your music will stop and Roon starts to prepare your backup, right? And then you get the “Uh oh…”?
For me the connection reestablishes itself after a short while, about a minute or so. But this depends on performance of the Core, which has been seriously un-optimized since a couple of years.
Thanks for the additional report! Per Mikes reply, we do have a ticket in with the development team, but progress is slow-moving. When any updates are made, we’ll absolutely reach out with new information. Until then, we appreciate your patience!
