Content being pulled from NAS struggling to play

I have been experiencing the same thing for a few weeks with ROON installed on my Synology NAS 412+. I had assumed that it was because my NAS was old and sluggish - and was actually considering investing into ROCK hardware, but now that I’m reading that, i’m wondering if it’s not a ROON issue (i’m not using ROCK - yet), and my NAS could still work fine without stopping all the time.

Moving forward, I have went ahead and split your post out to it’s own thread as we believe you may be experiencing a different issue then what is being reported in the previous thread. To help us better understand this behavior you are experiencing, may I very kindly ask you for the following:

  • A brief but accurate description of your current setup using this link as a guide.

  • Please verify the size of your collection (based on number of tracks) that is being housed in the 412+.

  • Please describe how the 412+ is communicating with your network and the application. I want to have a clear understanding of how content is moving from the NAS, to the core, and then out to your endpoints. Having insight into any networking hardware you are implementing would be very helpful.

  • Do you notice the same behavior when playing content directly from the internal storage of your core machine?

If your issue is related to playback, let us know what you’re trying to play, specifically:
Right now, it was a Tidal Playlist of Blues, starting with Cream “Crossroad” that stops after 1:20 min. But it happens a lot lately on many other material. There are days in and days out.

What format and type of file are you trying to play?

Does this issue happen with all files or just some?
It’s rather random. I originally thought i noticed it more on high res MQA, but now i’m not sure anymore

Where did the media come from? Did you rip it or convert yourself, or did you purchase it somewhere?
Ripped myself, but that is not really the issue here

A few things moving forward…

In light of the above I would recommend trying the following the tests in the order listed below to see if we can trigger a change in performance:

  1. From your follow up it “sounds” like you have an iMac (Intel Core i5 3.1 GHz 4 cores) currently working as a remote device to control RoonServer on the NAS. Please try letting this computer host your Roon core and verify if you run into the same issue(s).

If performance does not improve with the iMac hosting Roon and the NAS just acting as a network storage device…

  1. With the iMac still acting as your core machine, please disable your network storage folders and move some media to the internal storage of the iMac. Create a “test watch” folder using the media now on the iMac and watch the folder in Roon. How do things perform?
