Hi All. i’m in the process of building a fanless roon core and am thinking about making it dual boot to take advantage of the processor power for other admin functions.
So it’ll be Win11 pro for occasional admin in one partition but what are your thoughts/suggestions for an OS for the roon partition (which will be active & running virtually 24/7
I’d think you’d use the OS you are most comfortable and familiar with, and confident to keep running reliably? Personally I’d go with whatever Linux flavor that I know my way around, but if you’re a Windows person why not use that?
If you are virtualising you can try as many as you have disk space to support. I would use a good VM application for the best results. I used VMWare in windows many years but on Mac I use parallels.
There are only 3 options, Windows, some Linux, or ROCK if it happens to work. If Linux, then there are lots of options of course, but again it comes down to familiarity. There is not really a significant performance difference between them. You probably don’t want a rolling release, so Arch is out, and Gentoo not worth the time spent, so it’s Debian or a Debian-based one like Ubuntu, or Fedora and the like if you are more familiar with Redhat-based ones. Probably a server release, but the difference is not huge if you install a desktop release and then don’t boot into the GUI
Thanks, that’s food for thought. I will look further at Ubuntu as I have a little experience as @wizardofoz mentioned I will take a look at the vmware option.
I’m not sure if rock is a viable option although it could be a better option, if it worked…
With ROCK you can only try and either it works or not Ubuntu is a good choice in any case because many people use on the forum and there’s ample help on the web
