It is better to use a low-performing pc with the core installed, connected to the router via ethernet and directly connected to the usb dac or to have the core on a more powerful pc connected via wifi to the low-performing pc than before that would have Roon bridge and the usb dac ?
The latter is potentially better but it varies. The variables are many but USB connection to a core is the easiest but least attractive way of doing things. Important thing is it doesn’t hurt to try both.
Edit, the biggest issue is connecting a core by WiFi. That is potentially worse than the USB issue.
I tried a speed test. Wifi and ethernet have the same speed (70 mbps). I am tempted to try the second solution. I have some problems with the older PC, it often stops playing.
OK but Roon core and WiFi don’t always work well together.
It won’t be the same in use as Ethernet is Duplex and doesn’t suffer interference, so the real world throughout on Ethernet is generally much higher than WiFi.
My bridge is connected via ethernet. But I think this is irrelevant.
The Core will be the biggest driver, though the end points are better off on Ethernet as well, I have had some good experience with them on WiFi
Lots of people warn against WiFi, I always say it works fine. I have 7 endpoints connected by WiFi, one with Ethernet, and even then the core is connected to the internet (Tidal and Qobuz) through WiFi. No problems, and I play high res whenever I can.
I think the difference in perspective is factual: if you use Bad WiFi ™ there may be trouble, but with Good WiFi ™ it works great.
I have had plenty of bad experiences with Bad WiFi ™ over the years. My current Good WiFi ™ is by Eero.
Now I am trying Roon server and Roon bridge installed on the same, old, pc. I want to see if this solution is “lighter”…
