Creating a brand new (initially empty) database on my NAS

Hello Roon, This is my very first support post. I just finished setting up and installing my new Intel NUC with Roon OS Rock runinng on it. Let me first say that your instructions on your web site are OUTSTANDING!! Had to read it several times but that’s OK. I was able to figure it out. Now to my question. I bought a Synology NAS. I dont have any music or playlists or anything else that I want to import. I just want to create a brand new database that resides on my NAS storage. How can i create an initially empty database for my music files that resides on my NAS. My intel NUC running ROCK is on the same network as my NAS.

Thanks, again great getting started instructions on your website.

Thanks
T

Create a folder on the Nas. Go to roon storage and input the location. Not sure anything will happen until you put something in the folder, perhaps download some free stuff of the net.

Forgive me as I am a brand new novice beginner. How do I “go to roon storage”?

Thanks

Hi Tim,

Roon OS is a custom Linux based operating system, tailored for running Roon Server and providing a best-in-class, appliance-type user experience to host the Roon Core.

Make sure you are installing to an SSD and not a spinning disk. The NUCs we recommend have an M.2 SSD slot for just this purpose. ROCK’s installer will use a tiny bit of it for the operating system, and the rest for the Roon Database.

If you successfully installed ROCK on your NUC you already have an empty database. :grinning:
Storing the database outside of your ROCK makes no sense. Use the NAS to store your music library.
You can find further information here.

Best regards,
Daniel

  1. Using ROCK
  • Start Roon Remote or Roon
  • You will need to connect to ROCK by selecting it from the " Choose Your Core " screen.
  • Note: If you’ve already used Roon before with another Core, you will probably want to migrate your >Roon database to ROCK. You can find information about migrating your database to ROCK here .
  • If you’re having trouble, try clicking “Disconnect” in Settings, or “Select A Different Core”

If you don’t have downloaded the client software already, you can find it here.
If the client is running and connected to the core, click top left to open the menu and then chose Settings > Storage > + Add Folder to configure a storage path for your music library.

Ok. I think I get it now.

I thought the “music library” and the “Roon database” were the same thing. Now I see that they are 2 separate items. I did install my Intel NUC with an SSD drive.

So my ROON database physically lives on my NUC running ROCK and its SSD.

And my music library will physically reside on my NAS.

Is this correct?

Thanks

T

@TKelley yes that’s correct…you music can reside on many devices if you choose. A nas is fine, and what many with a nas available use, but it could also and additionally reside on an external usb drive on your NUC or even on a shared folder on another computer, but the database always stays on the core (rock in your case) system. Don’t forget to do databanks backups either.

My apologies I presumed you meant create a library for your music files. A NAS will work fine as long as the network connection is is good.
