Crossfeed incorrectly applied

Describe your network setup

Roon Server on Mac Mini directly wired to router

Forgive me, I must have missed where to add a long-form description of the issue when submitting the form…

I’ve been experimenting with crossfeed, and I’ve noticed something which seems strange to me. If I set the Feed level to 15db it sounds almost the same as if the filter is off. And if I set it to 1db then everything becomes so centered it almost seems mono.

This seems to me to be the exact opposite of how it should work.

Great test track: Every You Every Me by Placebo
The opening guitar is panned so hard right you’ll think your left speaker/driver is dead. It begs for a bit of crossfeed. But if you set it in Roon to 1db that same guitar will basically be centered.

Unless it’s just me, it seems crossfeed is incorrectly set up as (15 - X) instead of just X

Thanks for checking into it!

Hi @Seth_Engstrom,

Thanks for the report. You’re not imagining the confusion, although nothing is malfunctioning. This is just a question of nomenclature.

More or less, Roon interprets the “feed level” here as the amount of attenuation, which is the opposite of what you’re expecting based on your post. At 15dB, there’s strong attenuation (very little crossfeed mixed in); at 1dB, the crossfeed signal is nearly unattenuated, which blends the delayed and original channels strongly.

Roon’s crossfeed is a psychoacoustic algorithm using Baur stereophonic-to-binaural DSP. It’s deceptively complicated under the hood; users might encounter some channel blending “shadows,” so to speak, depending on the settings and the source material. We’ll watch for your response. Thanks!

I see. Well, that’s certainly counterintuitive.

The article is a bit overly technical for most audiences. Roon users might be better served by adjusting the language on the setting page itself, perhaps “Feed Level 1dB (more) - 15dB (less)”

Thanks for the help!
