On the first USB HDD, I have an automatic database backup scheduled once a week (26 max). It has worked fine for years without error. The last successful backup shows as Oct. 19, 2025. Periodically, I run “Find Backups” and they’ve always been there. However, this evening when I checked, I get a message saying, “No Backups Found”. I tried rebooting the Salkstream, but that didn’t make any difference.
On the second USB HDD, I do manual database backups at least once a month (no max), or whenever I make changes to my local music collection (my local music files are stored on the Salkstream’s internal HDD). When I run “Find Backups” on this USB HDD, all the backups are there as expected.
I went ahead and manually ran a database backup to both drives, then ran “Find Backups” on both. The new backups show up on both drives.
The only thing I’ve done with both drives recently are to connect them to my Windows 11 computer and ran chkdsk to make sure both drives were in good shape (no issues found). Could this have caused the backups to disappear on the first drive? If so, it’s odd it didn’t affect the second drive.
Any ideas why all my backups on the first USB drive disappeared?
Note: Since discovering all my previous database backups missing on one of my external USB drives, I’ve done multiple database backups, including one set up as an automatically scheduled backup (worked fine), and they show up fine when running “Find Backups”.
I’m glad to hear it’s not Roon. Any ideas what may have caused the backups to disappear?
The only thing I can think of that I’ve done recently with that particular USB drive is to connect it directly to my Windows 11 PC and run chkdsk.
Normally, this USB drive always is directly connected to the Salkstream so Roon can automatically perform automatic scheduled backups to it. Is it possible running chkdsk did something to make the database backups invisible to Roon?
I did the same with the second USB drive (used for periodic/regular manual database backups), but it didn’t have any issues with backups disappearing.
Sometimes, when you connect a Linux-formatted or mixed-use drive (especially ext4, exFAT, or NTFS) to Windows:
Windows may create or modify hidden system folders (System Volume Information, $RECYCLE.BIN, etc.).
In rare cases, it can “heal” the filesystem by renaming or relocating orphaned directories, meaning your original Roon backup folder might still exist, just under a slightly different or hidden path.
If Roon’s backup location was /mnt/usbdrive1/RoonBackups, and that folder got renamed or relocated (even case-sensitive differences matter on some systems), Roon may not be able to find it.
Check this:
Reconnect the first drive to your computer.
In Windows Explorer, enable View → Hidden items and View → Protected OS files.
Look for a folder like FOUND.000, RoonBackups, or similar that might have been renamed or moved.
If nothing obvious shows up, run a file search for *.roonbackup
I looked in Windows Explorer > View > Show > Hidden Items. There was no option called “Protected OS files”.
Clicking on Show > Hidden Items didn’t seem to reveal anything new. There is a folder called RoonBackups, which I expected as I have performed a few backups to this drive the past few days after discovering previous backups were gone.
However, looking in the RoonBackups folder I see this
If I click on the first folder I see this (just a sample of the MANY files). I noticed that the “Date modified” dates go from the last backup performed yesterday, Oct 26, 2025, all the way back to early this year, well before the backups seem to disappear from the drive. Does this mean all my prior backups (I have Roon Scheduled Backup set to once a week, 26 max) are still there, but Roon just doesn’t see them using the Find Backups function?
Well shucks. Going to View - Clean/restore, the only backups that show are the same 5 that I performed the past couple days, after I discovered all were missing, that also show using Find Backups.
Because Roon tracks backups by their full path, this change in the mount point is why older backups are no longer visible in “Find Backups”. The data itself is still on the drive; it’s just that Roon sees it as a different location now.
To resolve this:
Ensure your drive mounts with the same name/path as it had previously (Seagate Backup Plus) when connected to your Salkstream.
Once the mount point matches the previous one, Roon should recognize all older backups again.
Windows’ chkdsk or connecting drives to different systems can sometimes cause the OS to change the volume label, which explains why your second USB drive wasn’t affected.
Please try remounting the drive with its original name and let us know if the older backups reappear.
In trying to diagnose the above issue, I’ve disconnected the drives from the Salkstream and connected them to my PC a few times without losing access to the recent backups I’ve performed. The Backup Plus drive still shows all its backups going back to 2020, and the Seagate Backup Plus drive just shows the 5 backups I performed over the past few days after discovering the older backups (up to 26 total) were no longer found by Roon.
The issue with older backups not being found on the Seagate Backup Plus drive occurred before I started trying to figure out why my transfer speeds have slowed down., so the paths shouldn’t have changed for either drive.
Currently, as best as I can tell, the current backup paths are exactly the same as before. Both drives are currently connected to the Salkstream if you would like to check this.
If you move your backups to the second drive (the one that is still visible) for example in the RoonBackups_old folder, and then try Settings → Backups → Find Backups → Browse, are the backup files available there?
I’m a little confused. There is no folder named “RoonBackups_old” on either drive. Each drive has a folder named “RoonBackups” that I can see and access over my network from my PC.
For clarity, both drives are visible from my PC and to Roon. On the Backup Plus drive, all backups I’ve ever performed to that drive can be found by Roon using Find Backups. However, on the Seagate Backup Plus drive, the only backups that Roon can see are the 5 I created the past few days after discovering all other previous backups disappeared.
Could you clarify exactly what you want me to try?
I’m afraid the work I did to resolve that issue likely makes it impossible to diagnose the disappearing backups issue in this support thread. The USB drive in question has been wiped and reformatted.
The Roon database backups I’ve performed, both manual and automatically scheduled, since the others disappeared are now showing up normally in Find Backups.
My best guess is something happened to change the older backup files when I disconnected the drive from my streamer, hooked it up to my Windows 11 PC, then ran chkdsk.
If what I’ve done to fix the issue in the above link has made it impossible for you to diagnose the issue in this support thread, please feel free to close this thread. If the disappearing backups issue reoccurs, I’ll post a new support thread.
