I suppose. Apart from sharing that you have a Roon Nucleus and Dell XPS 15 laptop, you really have not told us how you’re doing anything…just that you are not happy with the results. So, yes. I have assumed that you have a USB DAC connected directly to your Nucleus and possibly another connected to your laptop. Is this not the case?
Regardless, Euphony OS is a fine solution if you don’t want to follow Roon Labs’ recommendations for sound quality.
Honestly, I’m just trying to help you find an alternative or intermediate solution since I really doubt Roon Labs will change when background processing is scheduled. Even if they do, it may take months or years for the new feature to make it into a release. In the meantime, your options are to tolerate unsatisfactory sound quality, follow Roon’s sound quality recommendations, or switch to something else, like Euphony OS, Audirvana, etc. All the best, regardless of what you decide.
Read it again chief, that wasn’t me. AND, even if it was, explain why Roon needs to use 145% of processor capabilities to do background processing of who knows what while its playing music?
I can’t hear my machine, it is fully water cooled and doesn’t make a peep. If it wasn’t for the reduction in sound quality, I would not have even known what was happening. So I SSHed into the machine to see what was going on and there it is, Roon using a ton of resources while HQPlayer only used 15%.
Ah. wrong post, you’re right. Sorry 'bout that. Looking at your other post now…but wish you had shared those details earlier.
PC to a NAA sounds reasonable. There should be no difference in sound quality during background processing with that topology unless your PC is in your listening room or shares the same electrical circuit with your audio components. Even if it’s water cooled, it will still be emitting all kinds of RFI, EMI, and ground plane contamination during periods of high resource usage. These can spoil the sound in a highly resolving system.
Roon Labs is unapologetic about how Core (and Control) are CPU/GPU hogs. I don’t expect that to ever change, but perhaps it might if enough people ask. Personally, I’m fine with the current separation of concerns since the inverse-square law (putting distance between Core and Outputs) has been effective at eliminating contamination in my systems.
Again, my apologies for mixing up your setup with @Jim_F’s. This is a busy and unnecessarily emotional thread, but I hope you’re able to solve things to your satisfaction.
this thread is the straw that broke the camels back. Every topic asking for help or making any slight criticism, or making a suggestion to make Roon even better is shouted down with the same old excuses of how the user is doing it wrong…
well, I shut down Roonserver and that exact same hardware is playing music with significantly increased clarity and presence using only HQPlayer.
So you guys can blame everything but Roon all you want, that will never change the facts. It’s the equivalent of putting your head in the sand while screaming and plugging your ears.
edit: You accuse me of not sharing my system…
a) you never even asked before assuming
b) even if my DAC was plugged directly into my machine why does Roon use 145% of processor resources during playback? Do they care at all for sound quality?
c) why does shutting roonserver down solve the problem?
In my defense, these “J” icons look very similar. It was easy to mix them up, but I should have read more carefully. Jim’s post about his setup in the middle of this thread threw me off a bit. LOL.
it’s okay.

There are no winners here, all those involved should ask themselves how could I have have showed more empathy and been constructive not negative or dismissive of other people’s views.
