Device Volume Setting Starting Playback on Max Volume

Core Machine (Operating system/System info/Roon build number)
2010 iMac

iMac is Lan Connected. Roon endpoint is hardwired from Apple Airport Extreme

I am using an Oppo UDP-203 via ethernet connection, running a digital coax cable into an integrated amp.

Description Of Issue
When I use “Device Volume” as a setting for the Oppo, my ability to change volume level in the iPhone app is greyed out. At start of playback, the music is incredibly loud, likely above 75Db reference level, no matter what the volume is set to on the amp. I am afraid of damaging my speakers. I had to change to “fixed volume” with a max cap on volume to fix this.

However, I have another wireless speaker for which I use Roon via Airplay. There, I use device volume with no issue and am able to control volume via the app or via the speakers volume controls itself. So, this begs the question for me of what is the difference between device volume and fixed volume? If I want to control volume on my amp, not via Roon, which setting should I use?

Hi @Paul_Daniel,

Welcome to the forum.

Could you please provide a screenshot of your Device Setup tab for this zone?

You could try setting Volume Limits in Device Setup, does setting that help?
