Difficulty Removing Duplicate Albums from Roon Library (ref#PM7TO5)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· OMG! I spent the last 35Min. writing you - I must have hit a wrong key and everthing disappeared.
I have written in before about this issue, but your reply was too complicated to follow. I then got busy with all my "life" commitments and had to let the problem drop.
My issued began last year when I switched to a new server and lost 99% of my music. After much ado you were able to help me find and reinstall all my music to Albums/Library.
However, I now have duplicate and triplicate albums likely because I had inadvertently stored my music in a number of files.
When I tried to deleted a duplicate album, it ended up deleting both albums.
If we assume that the duplicate/triplicate albums are due to them being in more than 1 file, what is the easiest way of deleting the duplicate albums.
Please be aware that when I purchased my Roon membership many years ago, I did not realize that I had to be a super/wizard
technician to manage your music platform. Roon is very complicated. Please go easy on me and explain in the simplest of terms how to go about deleted my duplicate and triplicate albums without deleting all copies.
Thanks

Hey @Tim_deCocq,

Thanks for taking the time to write in and create another report. I’ll share the same questions we were intersted from your original post:

To help us understand the situation more precisely:

  1. Are the albums duplicated in your actual music folders, or are you only seeing duplicates within Roon?
  2. Please share a screenshot of one example duplicate album.
  3. For that same album, please also open: Album → Versions* and share a screenshot of what is shown there.
This will allow us to determine whether Roon is displaying multiple versions from different sources (e.g., local + streaming), or if the files are actually duplicated on disk.

This should be an easy issue to fix

Hi Ben, I know you said 1 screen shot but there are 2 situations. Most are strictly duplicates, but some are albums which fragmented when I changed over to my new server. Thanks again, Tim

Hi me again,
I was unable to find “Versions” of the albums by going into the album.

Hi, I found “Versions” on most, but not all, of my albums. I did not send you shots of the albums that had no Versions.

Tim

All duplicate albums seem to be present in two different storage locations.

In settings → storage you can enable and disable storage locations.

If you don’t want to disable locations, you can also choose to not show hidden tracks and albums under settings → general. This way, all albums with more than one version in your library will only show up once in a view.

Hello
@benjamin,

As per screen shot, hidden tracks and Albums have already been turned “Off” (disabled) by default in settings>storage.

And, what will happen if I choose to ‘disable’ the files under ‘General’? If I do this, in what file will Roon store my music?

I thought you were to going to instruct me as to how to delete all these duplicates.

Your last screenshot in the above post shows that you have explicitly added the Music folder on your Mac (where your Roon Server is running) as a Watched Folder.

The thing is, the Music folder has also been added by Roon Server by default (showing as Music Folder).

So you have the same folder set as a Watched Folder twice - hence all your albums are duplicated.

Just delete the second instance of the Music folder that you added - use the “3 dots” menu and choose “remove”.

2nd instance? Do you mean the Music folder grouped with:
“Deborah’s- MacBook Macintosh HD, Users, Deborah”?

Yes, that’s it.
Don’t worry, you won’t break anything.

Okay, but did you read my question?

Yes, the one that you added manually, because it’s a duplicate of the same one that’s already there by default („Music Folder“)

Okay thanks, please see the folders I “Removed”. ( I am just left with the what I presume is the "Default Music folder) While this fixed a number of duplicates, I still have a number of duplicates and triplicates. See attached.

Just to be 100 percent safe, perform a backup first, under settings → backups.
And after that, goto settings → library → library maintenance → cleanup library. Tick all the boxes there and perform the cleaning.
I hope this helps.

This is not as clear as you might think:
(1) When I go into settings>backups, it gives 3 options one of which is"Back Up Now". It then tells me to select a location. Next screen says Choose a folder to backup to. Library is in bold but nothing happens when i select Library. This page also says Warning, Using this Library is not recommended.
After you advise me what to do, I will go to your next step of Library Maintenance.

Create a different folder on your Mac, anywhere outside the Music and Library folders, and choose this.

(By the way, you should always have a working backup configuration at all times, ideally more than one on different drives, if you value your Roon library metadata content. Bad things can happen)

Could you select ‘Deborah’ at the top, then click ‘new folder’ at the bottom, name that folder ‘Roonbackups’ and proceed?

Hello Arlen, are you with a Roon technical advisor?
Thanks

Yeah, so don’t select that one…

Either do this…

Or, e.g., in the Mac Finder go to “Desktop” (or some other place) and create a new folder, e.g., MyRoonBackups. Then, in Roon, go to MacintoshHD > Users > deborah > Desktop, and select the new MyRoonBackups folder.
