I created a tag and it currently contains 143 tracks. If you create a Smart Playlist with the same tag, there are 141 tracks. How can this be explained? Or how can this be resolved?

Thanks for writing in! It’s good to consider how Smart Playlists filter content vs. how Tags store content. A tag is just a label on an object; a Smart Playlist re-evaluates rules and excludes anything that isn’t eligible to appear in playlists.

Did you only tag individual tracks using the tag? Or did you apply the tag to:

  • Album-level tags
  • Work/Composition tags, or
  • Offline/unavailable files,
If so, it could be the case that they will show up under the Tag browser but will not qualify for a Smart Playlist whose rule is “Track Tag = X”.

To check this - In the Tag view, click your tag → look at the filter bar at the top. Make sure you are viewing Tracks only. You may find 1–2 items that are albums or compositions instead.

Another situation that could be occurring is that two tracks are currently unavailable, disabled, or not in the library. If you navigate to your Tag, look for “Unavailable”, “File not found”, “Disabled”, or “Hidden” markers.

One more thought - are any of the tracks potentially duplicates? If two versions of the same track (local + Qobuz/TIDAL) are tagged, Roon may:

  • Count both versions under the Tag browser
  • But show only one version in a Smart Playlist (because playlists use Roon’s primary version)
