Do I restore a database after importing all music to a new external HD?

My HDD attached as music storage to my ROCK/NUC bit it, and I am slowly but surely importing all my music to it from a backup of my music files. My question is do I restore from a backup that I had prior to the HDD failure? Or do I just back up once all the music has been imported?

What about “clean up library”?

Many thanks!

Depends. Your database backup contains your playlists, tags, bookmarks, edited credits, favorites, ratings, and so on. Also your play history. So if you used any of that and want to keep it, you want to restore the backup.

If you used Roon plainly with the information it has by default after reading your music files, you don’t necessarily have to restore a backup. Then it will just read the files again and do what it can.

Qobuz/Tidal albums will be synced back automatically from the streaming service.

As for Clean up Library, it says what it does if you click the button:

If you don’t restore a backup, it’s not necessary because everything will be set up from scratch. If you do restore, you may want to check afterwards if there are lots of missing things
