Does the clipping light only go on if headroom management is enabled?

Does the clipping light only go on if headroom management is enabled?

If show clipping is selected but headroom management disabled is clipping not shown by the red signal light ?

I always thought it did but now am seeing it doesn’t.

Yep. The help says this, which doesn’t make it very clear:

If the Clipping indicator won’t toggle on, first check to ensure that Headroom Management is enabled. Start by setting the Headroom adjustment to -3dB. If Headroom adjustment is left at 0dB the audio stream will not be modified

Hey Sloop,

Been a Roonie for almost 7 years and just recently figured out that “clipping” light" is an important indicator. I just never played with it. I heard some distortion on a handful of recordings…it bothered the heck out of me because I could not trace it down. Someone mentioned I look into that setting since I use custom Convolutions ala Thierry @ https://www.homeaudiofidelity.com for Room Correction. It turns out I needed almost -8 db to tune out my Clipping…I know this sounds crazy but that Setting adjustment made my whole system sound like like a brand new one…even playing 90db+, my system sounds so effortless and clean!!! All I can say is wow… that I was so lame not to check that when I first heard it…I’m just so lucky that distortion did no damage to my electronics or speakers!

I presume you’ve used a specific track you know to be mastered close to the limit?

Oh yes, on one of the most egregious remastering atrocities in the history of recorded music!

What is it?

The Boomtown Rats last album “in the long grass”.

Track is Dave

Horrendously remastered- it actually is headache inducing.

REW sweep @ 0dB to the rescue, ambiguities put to rest.

My reference track for clipping is Black Sabbath “13” - Loner. Clips around 2:20.
