I'm using Roon Server 2.0 (build 1442) production 64-bit on my 12-core AMD Windows 11 workstation with 64 GB RAM and 4 TB NVMe. My cell phone is a Galaxy Fold 6 with 1 TB memory using Roon Arc 1.0.55 build 100284. Smart downloads are on and I have downloaded a bunch (20 or so) albums to the device. None of the albums are playing on the phone. When I hit play, a circle starts to draw around the play icon, then stops then nothing happens. I need some help troubleshooting why the downloaded albums on my device aren't playing.
Describe your network setup
I use a netgear Nighthawk router, !Gbps Verizon FiOS connection. I do use Pi-Hole on the network. My workstation is wired to the router via a switch and my phone is wireless.
When I play back, I’m usually away from my network (walking around or on the subway). When I tested it, I was on my network on wifi with access to the server. I also deleted all downloaded music and uninstalled and re-installed the app. Same issue - I download an album - it works for a play or two then stops playing at all.
Thank you for the report. We can see track failures in ARC diagnostics, but want to confirm a timestamp with a playback failure on your part. Please provide the name of a track that failed to play.
There are address resolution failures with upstream services associated with Roon ARC. What happens if you temporarily disable the PiHole, just as a test?
Are you playing to the phone speakers, or to another output connected via Bluetooth/USB?
We’ll sync with development and get back to you. Thanks!
At 8:55 AM ET I tried to play a track called Invitation. I have tried it wiht and without pi-hole as well as inside and outside my firewall. I’m playing to the phone speakers.
Thanks for sharing the above timestamp - it looks like the file type attempted to play was Opus, I’d be curious to see if the same issue occurs with other file formats? Let me know if you’re able to give this a try.
The track itself never begins buffering from the mobile device. Are you able to play any of the tracks using a different app outside of Arc?
99% of the tracks are FLAC and ARC is transcoding to OPUS. They all play perfectly fine in Emby and with VLC. Keep in mind I’m trying to resolve this issue with downloaded files, not streaming from the server, which works fine.
Thank you for the very precise and efficient help pinning this down. We’ve identified the output error in ARC logs and we’re syncing with development to reproduce.
Would you mind uploading any of your downloaded and failing FLAC tracks here to our media uploader? We’d like to reproduce with an original file first, if possible.
One last question - can you confirm the Playback quality settings you’ve applied in ARC? Does this reproduce regardless of whether Balanced and Bandwidth Optimized is selected?
We haven’t reproduced the issue with the file you uploaded, but we have seen similar symptoms with other files and have an open ticket to address a particular mechanism of transcoding failures. It’s unlikely this is file-specific and more likely a unique condition in the connection and audio transport between RoonServer and ARC.
Development is investigating. Thanks again for your patience.
My first response is that it seems intermittent. I have tried it with offline mode on and off and gotten the same result.
Last week, I took a road trip where I drove for 9 hours each way. Roon worked without a problem. I thought this might have something to do with offline mode - not sure exactly what that does - but I have been able to use Roon while not in offline mode and not attached to the server. In NY we have subways which don’t have cellular connectivity and my server is only accessible outside my firewall via VPN. Not sure if any of that helps, but I hope to demonstrate the complex networking envirnment this presents.
Hi @Nathaniel_Bonini,
Our dev team has suggested that you try deleting all of the albums and trying different quality settings. The original recording won’t allow any transcoding settings.
