Describe the issue

I have 2 main issues. Perhaps they are connected.
First: Dropouts
Now: Unable to connect to Roon Server on some Roon Remote devices

For a few weeks I have had numerous dropouts during the day. Music stops playing momentarily then resumes; or music stops playing and doesn't resume; or music stops playing then skips to the next track in the queue.

Roon is installed on a dedicated system: Antipodes S30/S40 as Player/Server. There are no other processes running on the Antipodes.

I have Roon Remotes on a Macbook M1, iPad Pro (gen1), iPhone 15, Dell 7390 running Windows 11. The M1 is my main go-to for playing music on Roon so most of my comments about the inability to play music is directed at the M1.

Concerning dropouts: I have restarted Roon on the Server, then reinstalled Roon completely. Neither worked.
The dropouts then became "Waiting for your Server" over and over again.

Then yesterday 2/10/2025 on the M1, Roon Remote could 'see' the S40 & S30 but the 'connect' button was greyed out. I deleted Roon Remote again and reinstalled.

Roon Builds on Devices & their Roon Playing Status:
M1 Roon Remote is build 1559. It cannot find the S40 Roon Server.
iPhone 15 Roon Remote is build 1559. It cannot find my Roon Server at all.
Dell 7390 (windows 11) Roon Remote is build 1559. It is connected to Roon Server & can play music.
iPad Pro Roon Remote is build 1554. It is connected to Roon Server & can play music.
Roon Server S40 is build 1559.

Describe your network setup

Roon Server & Player is installed on the Anitpodes S30 / S40 combo. No other processes are installed on this setup, it is completely dedicated to Roon. The S30/S40 are connected by Ethernet cabling to the Telstra 5G Modem/Router. These are the only components in the Network Chain.

Hello @Lyall_Johns ,

Can you please let us know the exact local time + date + server when this issue next occurs? We’ll enable diagnostics for your account and perhaps it will reveal some clues. Thanks!

Hi Noris,
There have been no dropouts for one day. I’ll let you know when that happens next.

I am still unable to use Roon Remote on my Macbook M1 or iPhone 15 - both unable to connect to Roon Server on the Antipodes S40: the ‘connect’ button is greyed out. This is an ongoing issue and is not time specific.

Hi Noris,
A message “waiting for roon server” just flickered on the Roon Remote on my Dell laptop. No music is playing at the moment.

Hello @Lyall_Johns,

As a temporary test, could you kindly spin up the Roon Server on your MacOS and try connecting to it via the Windows laptop? This will help us isolate whether the issue is specific to the Antipodes S30/S40.

Thank you!

Hello,
I installed Roon on my Macbook M1 and it worked - it was able to find & play music I have on the M1

To summarise again, using the S40 as my Roon Server:
Macbook M1 & iPhone 15 cannot ‘find’ or connect to Roon on the S40 Music Server.
iPad Pro & Dell laptop can find & connect to the S40 Music Server and play music from the S30 configured Player.

This morning, playing music through the S40/S30 using the Dell laptop as Roon Remote there have been many dropouts, ‘waiting for Roon server’ messages, and pausing in the middle of a track then skipping forward to the next track in the queue.

Hello,
How do I remove the Roon Server on my Macbook?
Roon Remote on the Macbook no longer even sees my Antipodes for connection.

I want to have a clean Roon Remote on the Macbook as I have an appointment on Monday Oct 6 with Antipodes Support to get their perspective on the matter.

Hi @Lyall_Johns,

Apologies for the delay here!

You can deactivate Roon Server on your Mac by quitting Roon Server via the Roon Jellyfish found on your Mac taskbar in the upper right-hand corner of your desktop:

This will force your Mac to select a different Roon Server - you can select your S40, moving your Mac back into strictly a Roon remote :+1:

Certainly, let us know how the above goes! :folded_hands:

Hello @Lyall_Johns

Would you kindly let us know how it goes with the Antipodes Support?

Hello,
Antipodes Support spent some time on Monday viewing my Server configuration - it was discovered that a packet used by Antipodes as part of their Roon Server install / re-install process was missing. This was fixed. In addition Antipodes Support completely refreshed the software on my S40 Music Server just to be sure - they are now confident the Antipodes devices are not part of the problem.

Nevertheless, Roon playback remains problematic on my system.

I have been testing Roon playback since Monday to assess any changes resulting from the Antipodes checks & updates. Playback was initially smooth, but after a few hours all the problems resumed.

Roon Remote (build 1559) on Windows 11 running Roon Server & Player on my Antipodes S40 & S30 continues to experience any of the following each minute: momentary & indefinite dropouts, track skipping, slow file loading, “Waiting for your Roon Server” or “No Audio Devices Found” or “Tidal Login Failed” messages; with very few minutes of relief where music is played smoothly & continuously.

Roon Remote (build 1559) on MacOS & iOS can “see” my Antipodes Roon Server & Roon Player devices but remains incapable of Connecting to them (Connect buttons greyed out).

Can the Roon team please have a close look at my setup to determine what the problem is?

Hello @Lyall_Johns

From the diagnostic report from your S40, we see that the RAAT server is fully disabled via the environment variables by Antipodes.

10/08 14:59:38 Info: [raatserver] local RAATServer is disabled due to ROON_DISABLE_LOCAL_AUDIO_DEVICES environment variable

Would you kindly let us know you are trying to play from S30 to S40 and vice versa?

Would it be that RAAT is disabled because I am currently using Squeezelite as frontend to Roon Server so I can play music? I am using Squeezelite simply because I cannot use Roon Remote or Roon Player without considerable problems as described previously.

Normally, when I use Roon for both Player & Server, S40 is Roon Server and S30 is Roon Player.

Would it work if we organise a time during the day or night, Australian Central Daylight Saving Time (ACDT), so I can have Roon as Server & Player set up for you to check?

For me, it would be best to organise a time between 2400 hours and 0800 hours ACDT.

Hello @Lyall_Johns,

You can enable the Roon output mode, perform the testing, and record the timestamp of the occurrence. Once done, please share the timestamp here — it will appear in the historical diagnostic data, and we’ll be able to review it.

Hello,
I carried out tests during the early hours this morning. Theses are the results. Times are for ACDT.

  • 04:33 Roon stopped playing. “No Audio Devices found”. Did not resume playing automatically.
  • 04:36 resumed playing with manually pressing the Play button after a few attempts in between “Waiting for your Roon Server” messages.
  • 04:38 Music stopped playing. “No Audio Devices Found”. Many “Waiting for your Roon Server” messages.
  • The whole Playlist on screen was flashing off to a blank screen and back on again
  • 04:39 resumed playing with manually pressing the Play button
  • 04:44 Music stopped playing. Was able to manually press Play and get music to resume immediately.
  • 04:45 Music stopped playing. Was able to manually press Play and get music to resume immediately.
  • 05:02 Music stopped playing. Was able to manually press Play and get music to resume immediately.

I hope those are enough instances for you to check.

Also, I am still not able to use Roon Remote on my Macbook M1. Connect button for the S40 Music Server is greyed out.

Helo @Lyall_Johns

We have enabled the additional diagnostic for your account. Would you kindly restart your S40 multiple times and check the same after?

Hello,
I restarted the S40 7 times before I attempted to use Roon Remote.
This simple solution seems to have done the trick.

Since those restarts I have been listening to music most of the day without a single dropout or error message.
I’m crossing my fingers that this has indeed flushed out the problem.
Thank you for that.

I am left with the problem that Roon Remote on my Macbook M1 using MacOS 26 still takes ages finding my S40 but then cannot Connect as the Connect button is greyed out.
However, I have just found that Roon Remote on my iPhone 15 with iOS 18.7.1 now can find and connect to the S40 and play music.
Does this point to MacOS 26 being a problem?

Hey @Lyall_Johns,

That’s excellent news! We’ll share your results with the team - let us know how things perform over the weekend as well.

We’re currently working on a few fixes related to the recent macOS Tahoe update, which should be included in our next Roon update. Keep your eyes out for this update, and let us know if you continue to run into these issues afterwards.

Thank you!
