Dropouts happening [resolved: network issues]

@dylan @support . I’ve uninstalled Roon, then reinstalled and changed out the WiFi dongle. The issues still persist… no issues with any other software that would access my network or the internet including JRiver and using JRiver to access large video files.

What are the next steps on troubleshooting from Roon’s end? I understand the holiday, but no communication for many days on this.

Hi @Jarrod_Cohen

Thanks for the patience over the long weekend! Our team’s queue is a bit longer than typical at the moment, so it may take longer than expected for us to get back to everyone, but we’re working hard to make sure that we help everyone as soon as we can.

Looking at the diagnostics report from the time playing Nirvana tracks, I’m not seeing any particular errors on the Roon side that jump out. In most cases, it looks like playback might be stopping because of communication with the storage location, but it’s hard to say for certain that is the case with the data we have at the moment.

Can you try putting a small subset of tracks (an album or two) directly on the Core PC instead of the NAS? Do the same skips occur when playing to System Output? If so, please make a note of the time it occurs and the specific track name(s) and we’ll enable diagnostics to look at this instance as well.

@dylan Please look at my logs for today. Today it was happening randomly were it skips to the next song in my library. Wouldn’t the log only pick up the length of the song played?

Only live radio completely stops and that was happening today too, regardless of selection. You can see the issues with live radio in the logs when it stops within 15-20 minutes of being initiated or sooner. I’m also getting issues where my iPad and iPhone get disconnected from the core randomly. Like I said earlier this is a connectivity issue with the core regardless of media source.

Hence the issues, with my library, live radio and my devices to control the core. JRiver is on the same machine never disconnects and streams continuously uninterrupted for hours on end. I can also stream directly from my NAS library via my iPad, iPhone, or a/v processor without any interruption

Update: Roon completely stopped playing appetite for destruction from NWA via my library at the 1:33 second mark…it did not skip , but stopped. The time stamp is approximately 4:44 pm est

Stopped at 4:49pm eastern playing son of byford from Run DMC at the 23 second mark.

@dylan Attaching screen shots if the logs, where errors are clearly shown…

@dylan pearl Jame breathe and scream stopped at 5:51pm est, hit play again, stopped again at 5:52 pm eastern… how many more examples are needed here?

The logs are showing that errors of “the target machine refusing the connection”

@dylan after reading the logs, the offender appears to be my iPad controller. Any suggestions? Or at least that is what I am thinking

That’s easy. Shut down the iPad app and use your computer to control Roon to see what happens.

Nope that isn’t it. Shut down all the iPads and the Roon core still skips songs. Doesn’t look like it is iPad issue. I still believe it is related to the last build. @dylan skipping using Roon core only happened at 8:19 pm eastern.

I too am getting dropouts and skipped tracks with the 795 Build. Same symptoms as OP.

Me too…I put in a support ticket last week…started within 2 min of hitting play after the 795 update and has happened ever since…just happened again about 3 min ago. Weird. Hope it is something they can find/fix…any way to roll back to 790?

Many threads on the topic and all have in common that it has happened with the last 795 build. Unfortunate and disappointing that Roon is mostly non - responsive on the subject and silent especially when our yearly and lifetime subscriptions include tech support and resolution of issues and that service is currently not being adequately provided,

They should give an option to download an older build so we can rollback until the issue is addressed. I wouldn’t mind doing that even if it meant rebuilding my database, I would think someone on the forum might have saved a pre 790 build?

Are you playing to the iPad? because it shows that your iPad’s private zone being finicky, not your pi4

Can you try to play to the system output of the dell i5 core machine? do you still have issues?

@danny The issues are with any endpoint. Whether playing directly from the core using the system output, or either of my two raspberry pi4s.

I’m only using my iPad and iPhone as the controller. Because I am having issues with the core too, it eliminates the iPad or iPhone as the sole culprit.

At around 8 pm eastern yesterday I was testing the core and I had songs being stopped or just skipping.

I’ve only started having these issues since the last build. Prior to that Roon was working flawlessly since Jan 2021. All of the hardware in the chain has also been consistent.

Can you please play on system output, as I asked, taking note of the first song. Then play for a while, dealing with potential issues. Then give us a screenshot of your play history during this time, clearly showing the % played of each track. We will also need the local times of your plays so we can correlate logs.

I realize you may have tried this and other similar things in the past, but I’m looking to isolate conditions and keep this simple.

This problem comes up very often, and the causes are often unique to each user. Every release we make what cause issues like this to arise, but it is never actually related to the release. For these reasons, I am not trying to solve everyone’s issue at once. Let’s focus on you. Please conduct an isolated test as I requested, as it will best allow me to get you an answer.

@danny please see the screen shots below. I started playing the files via selecting a shuffle using the Rock Blues genre at approximately 7:19 PM EST using the direct output of my Roon core device to my Marantz AV8805.

I let the music play for approximately 30 minutes ending at 7:48 PM EST. Below are the images you asked for and please let me know what additional information I can provide. I tried looking through the logs too, but wasn’t sure what I should be lookin for.

The last file played was Lonesome Suzie

“System Output” of the Dell is what I want. You have introduced many variables by using your Marantz.

The System Output is where we start, and if that has issues, we work our way up.

Then also, more info: are you playing local files or tidal or Qobuz? Can you limit yourself to files first? What format? Check signal path. You may be playing a format better than the original because of optimizations Roon has made.

Also, where are your local files relative to the Roon Core?

@danny Okay. I will rerun as you suggest and post in the next 30 minutes or so. The files are all via my library on my Synology NAS and most of what was played was standard 16 bit red book cd rips as flac

Take your time. I’m putting the kids for the night, and then wife time, so I’ll probably take a look tomorrow.

It might be a good idea to remove the Synology from the equation for at least an album. Could you put a few files on the Dell locally so we can remove that as a variable? The thing I’m suspicious about right now is your USB 3.0 Ethernet adapter, or the cable attached to it. Your internet connection is probably more than fine, so I’m guessing you’re not going to have problems with TIDAL and Qobuz, but we’ll get there…

@danny . I was able to try it, and when I select system output and hit play it begins skipping through every song in the queu and doesn’t play anything. I started the playback at 8:46pm eastern.

I already swapped the Ethernet dongle and Ethernet cable and it didn’t change anything. I can try the local files in the AM.

Thank you for all you’re help it is much appreciated

@danny @dylan. I copied over an album directly to the core - hotel California. Hit play at 7:44 am eastern and all songs were skipped using the system output. Nothing would play. Let me know me what other information you need from me and the screen shot is below
