On the credit information screen for Bertrand Chamayou’s *Letter(s) to Erik Satie*, Alain Lanceron appears at the top but without a listed role.
Below that, Alain Lanceron appears again, this time listed as “Executive Producer.”
The album credits list “Alain Lanceron: Executive Producer,” and since deleting this entry removes the display entirely, it appears that the same person’s credit information is being shown twice.
Why are there two entries, with one lacking a role?
In any case, the top entry seems unnecessary.
Alain Lanceron is not listed in the track-level credit information.
Thank you for your post. We appreciate you taking the time to share illustrating screenshots.
The team is investigating logs and upstream metadata for the library entries you listed. Do you have any local tags for this artist or these albums that you’ve added to Roon? Have you made any edits to this album within Roon itself?
“Philip Bailey” appears twice in the credit information for the following album as well. It seems he is credited for “Liner Notes,” but perhaps this happens when someone holds a less common role like “Executive Producer” or “Liner Notes”?
This is normal. The first section, “Credited on”, contains the main personnel. If the “Production” section contains an important person in a production role, such as Bob Ludwig, they are also displayed in this section. And then they are displayed again in the “Production” section with their production credit.
Hmm, I don’t really consider roles like mastering, recording, or liner notes to be “primary” credits.
I’d really like to see the following implemented (even though there are only two votes so far):
I get it, but this is how it works right now. Sometimes, even the label appears there, if it is a really big one, like Universal. I guess it simply counts and weights the existing credit roles for every contributor.
Showing the label up there seems wrong to me, at least in this simplistic way. Of course, Universal will have many references, but it means little. (It might be more useful for small, specialist labels, but even then is questionable).
Regarding producer roles, I’m not sure. Arguably, very important producers might be interesting (edit: or stuff like mixing credits e.g. in some electronic genres, as @tripleCrotchet points out below)
I tend to agree. I see this pattern as well. One problem is that in certain genres the creative and operational split is not so clearcut. For example “star” DJ/Producer types in EDM. Roon’s “roles” do distinguish creative from operational producers but this is not applied consistently so I find it an edit I routinely make.
In the original example, in his discography, I get 7 unexpected “appearances” credits for Alain Lanceron and 154 expected “production” credits. What seems to be happening is that where there is an ambiguity between for example a “Vocal” genre and a “Vocal” performer credit, some producers like Lanceron are getting confused in both performer and production credits. It is not by any means an isolated example, I have also found, although I have not been so systematic recording examples as I find them.
Thank you for the detailed screenshots, and for checking the tag and edits. What you are seeing is how the credits screen is designed. The “Credited on” section at the top lists the most notable people credited on the album, and a notable producer or engineer can appear there without a role. The same person then appears again under “Production” with their role, which is why Alain Lanceron and the others show up twice. It is not a duplicate caused by your tag or by any edits.
We understand you would prefer to see only performers at the top. The post you started about standardizing where credit information is displayed is the right place to track that request: Standardizing the Display Location for Credit Information
Even if Alain Lanceron appearing under “Credited on” is by design, it is inconvenient that his role (Executive Producer) isn’t displayed given that he is a key figure, so I would appreciate it if this could be improved.
