Duplicate infestation

Hi,

I’m currently in trial mode and have a few weeks to make a decision.
So far the settings and interface impress me. It could use other bells and whistles but I use Neutron and VOX for that.
A real problem I stumbled over last night was the abundance of duplicates that Roon has added to my library. Although I have a bit of a cluttered mess in my directories, I don’t want it to show in Roon. I want it to mirror my iTunes library, which I’ve tidied up for the most part.
Does anyone know a quick spray for this bug?

Thanks.

Hello @Ben_Talbot, welcome and I hope you get to stay…

Are your duplicates really so? Do you mean identical or slightly different versions? The solution is different in each case.

If we go for the first, could you post a screen shot of your settings > storage tab?

Ok, thanks. I had wondered if there was a problem with the way the storage locations had been set up.

As I asked before, are your duplicates identical? Do the versions exist, as far as you know, in your database, or is Roon producing duplicates where none should exist?

If your storage does indeed have these extra versions then Roon normally gathers these together. If you don’t want to see them all, then use settings > General > show hidden tracks and albums to “no”. This KB article gives some background.

But we really need to establish whether these duplicates are real or not.

When I want to merge discs it warns me of the duplicates. I believe it’s from my database. Even a duplicate cleaner I have won’t get rid of them.
Is there one in the roon system that will get rid of them?

Whoa. I’m not clear what you are trying to do here.
Before we (or I) get too confused can you post a screenshot of the two albums you are trying to merge. We’ll then have a better idea of the problem.

For merging albums this KB article and a companion one on fixing track grouping may be helpful to read.

Look at all those duplicate albums. I just want to get rid of those and keep the one I have saved on iTunes.

A quick sanity check… do each of those ‘duplicates’ each have only one track from the actual ‘album’?

In Itunes they do, but in Roon, there are multiple albums. Each of them has the genuine album, it appears. But several other files are copies of copies from audio editing software such as volume normalizers and such. So I guess my hard drive has held onto them and Roon has scanned every single audio file when all I wanted in Roon was what’s in iTunes. Does that make sense?

Can we be quite clear on this please. Take your Black gives Way… albums. Do they have one track each? Do they have the same track in each? Are they complete albums?

Could you post a screenshot of the track listing of one from Roon’s album browser?

Now If they are each holding one, unique, track, we need to merge, though I would like to understand why Roon is not importing them properly. Roon usually copes quite well with all sorts of folder organisation, although the typical Artist/Album/tracks format is pretty safe.

Now if this is the root cause and you do indeed have lots of identical (or nearly so) files, then I am loathe to “get rid of them” via Roon (although it can be done.) I think that there is too much chance of deleting the wrong ones.

Would it be possible for you to organise or partition your music folder so that all the “audio editing” copies are in a part of the music tree that is separate from the final versions? If so, we could simply point Roon at the good parts of the tree.

Brian,

I think I solved the puzzle. In Storage, I set it just for these folders you see in the screenshot and disabled all other music folders. Before this, it had added the duplicates from other folders. It looks as if my Roon library is mirroring my Itunes library, which was my goal in the first place.

Good, I wondered if a better specification of your folder setup would improve things.

So have your duplicates disappeared now and problems solved?

Hi @Ben_Talbot,

Are things fixed with the new watched folder structure?

Yes, from what I’ve seen so far, everything is looking good. Thanks, guys, for the help. I’ll have plenty of other questions, I’m sure.
