Duplicate "Jack Johnsons"

Content you’re reporting an issue with

I have duplicate primary artists for virtually all my Jack Johnson albums:

This surfer dude solo artist born in Hawaii:

Is being munged up with this band member of Flaming Groovies, born in USA

Have you made any edits to this content in Roon?

All Jack Johnson albums are affected. I have 8 of them. I have tried removing the duplicate Jack Johnson from one of the albums but there are +/- 15 tracks per album. This has to be done on a track by track basis. I cannot see anyway of doing this by batch.

Is the album identified in Roon?

All Jack Johnson albums are identified.

Is this content from local files, TIDAL, or Qobuz?

The affected albums are a combination of local and Qobuz.

Description of the issue

The problem is explained in the above sections so I will not repeat. I will add that I am seeing this duplicate artists and poor equivalencing issue a lot in recent releases. It seems like a systematic problem but I am only beginning to notice on a case by case basis through usage of the roon app.

Flamin’ Groovies had a Jack Johnson (who is not the surfer dude) according to Wikipedia and the third of your Roon screenshots,

Flaming Lips didn’t, as far as I can tell

Thanks. It’s a typo. I even circled Flamin’ Groovies. Corrected now.

@Tony_Casey What happens if you select “Prefer Roon” for “Track’s main performer credits” for all your (Hawaiian) Jack Johnson albums?

I know, just to avoid confusion

I cannot see how to do that at a track or album level. Isn’t that a global only setting?

The only similar thing I can see is at the album level I can “prefer roon” for the album artist in both “edit album” and “metadata preference”. But that made no difference.

Hmm. You appear to be correct.

What’s to be done?

It’s not really an option for me to globally set to prefer roon. That will trigger a complete library scan that will run for days. And in any case I have merge roon and file for several data items set as you can see from my library settings screenshots. The reason is that up until recent releases that minimized my own tagging effort. Roon filled in gaps with my tagging and vice-versa. The equivalencing logic between roon and file data items also worked, if not perfectly, at least within acceptable error limits.

But this is no longer the case. I am noticing a very marked deterioration in equivalencing both between roon and file and also between roon and roon (you are using more than one metadata supplier?). Now I am starting to notice not just duplicates but triplicates where roon is using 3 or more different artists with the same name.

It is almost as if roon was changed recently from assuming that if file and artist names are the same that they should now be considered different artists whereas in the past the assumption would be that they were the same artist.

Of course, it filters through everywhere. I have just realised in my queue for example.
