Describe the issue
I have tried to migrate from my QNAP TS-473 server recently converted to Docker/container set up ( which I eventually got working ok, but while going through the process ordered a Nucleus one in frustration) to a brand new Nucleus one but I have got stuck on endless database updates. I have updated the firmware to the latest level on the Nucleus. I have installed a 2tb SSD and copied my music (26000 tracks) to this internal storage. I can see the nucleus on my remote devices (iPad and iPhone) and my iMac mini 4. As recommended I have tried to restore from a backup. This has taken up to 24 hours to complete. Then I am told it needs updating to be compatible with my latest firmware, but I can then not connect to the interface on any device. I don’t know if it’s still trying to update the database or if there is just a network problem preventing my devices from reaching the server. I can connect to the Nucleus web interface without a problem. I originally tried to restore from the last forced back up on my QNAP TS473 server just prior to setting up the Nucleus. I’ve since tried restoring from earlier backups which were pre- container modification in case the data was corrupted- same problem. I have tried rebooting the nucleus, undertaken sequential rebooting of router, switch and nucleus- nothing seems to work. I bought the Nucleus because I was fed up trying to engineer solutions on my NAS following software updates but it so far doesn’t seem any easier. My router is tp -link Archer AXE75 operating in router mode connected to Virgin 1gb hub in modem mode. Any help would be much appreciated as I’m driven to distraction.

Thank you for reaching out, and I completely understand your frustration. Transitioning from a complex NAS setup to a dedicated Nucleus is supposed to simplify your experience, but there is a specific hardware constraint causing this endless update loop.
While you successfully copied 26,000 tracks to the internal SSD, the diagnostic logs reveal that the QNAP database backup you are attempting to restore actually contains over 300,000 tracks.
The Nucleus One is engineered and optimized specifically for libraries up to 100,000 tracks (roughly 10,000 albums). Attempting to process, migrate, and update a database three times that limit causes the Nucleus One to completely run out of available memory. When the system exhausts its RAM during this intensive process, it crashes and drops off the network, resulting in the endless loop you are experiencing.
To resolve this, you have two clear paths forward:
Start with a Fresh Database: If your active library is truly just the 26,000 tracks currently on the SSD, you can bypass the backup restoration entirely. Access the Nucleus Web Administration Interface, click Reset under the Roon Database & Settings section, and set it up as a brand-new Server. The Nucleus One will handle a 26,000-track library with ease, though previous play history and custom edits from your QNAP days will not carry over.
Utilize More Powerful Hardware: If you intend to keep and restore the full 300,000+ track database, you will need a Core with significantly more computing power and RAM, such as the Nucleus Titan, which is built specifically to handle massive libraries.
Which approach would you prefer to take to get your music playing again?
Thanks for the quick response. There is no way I have 300000 tracks - it’s definitely 26000. I guess there is some form of corruption in the database. I have come to the conclusion that I will reset and start afresh - while psychologically I like the idea of having a history going back to 2012 and my original Sooloos system I’m not sure my listening experience will be that effected. I didn’t have many play lists but enjoy Roon Radio. Having a clean, stress free listening experience is by far the most important. I’ll follow the process you laid out and call for help if I have any problems- cheers Dave
Just as an update - the Nucleus has been set up successfully but I’ve noticed that there is a scan underway that may be stuck - it’s showing it’s scanning 1/18693 files and has been at this stage for a couple of hours. Is there a problem or is this expected for a library of this size?
That’s not expected behavior, a fresh 26,000-track library shouldn’t sit stuck at 1/18693 for hours.
Could you please restart the Nucleus once more and let us know whether the scan progresses at all afterward, even slowly, or whether it sticks at the same file count again?
Also, could you please check your storage settings (Settings → Storage) and confirm exactly what’s being scanned, the path, and whether there’s more than one watched folder pointing at your library? Want to rule out anything unusual there before we look further.
Hi Vadim - it finally appears to have resolved itself. Don’t know what it was but overnight it’s completed. I only had the internal folder identified as a folder. My NAS is just a back up location with a new shared folder so there shouldn’t be any interference with it. Everything is super fast now so I’m delighted - cheers Dave
