First, the good news: you are not actually missing out on anything. Both your Roon Remote (This Mac) and your Roon Server (Prec’s Mac Studio M2) are currently running Roon 2.66 (build 1658), which is the latest available production version.
The “error checking for an update” message simply means your Roon software is currently having trouble phoning home to our cloud servers to verify its version status. Because you recently switched to a new TP-Link 5G cellular modem, this is almost certainly a network routing restriction caused by the new hardware or your cellular ISP.
To clear this error so Roon can successfully communicate with our backend in the future, please try the following steps:
Update DNS Settings: Cellular providers often use default DNS servers that can block or misroute these types of server calls. Please log into your TP-Link NX600 router’s administration page and change the DNS server to a reliable public option, such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8).
Verify Local Network Permissions: On your Mac, navigate to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network and ensure the toggle for Roon is switched ON.
If adjusting the DNS and permissions does not clear the error message, you can easily resolve it by performing a clean manual installation:
Reinstall the app. (Note: Doing this will not delete your music library or your Roon database; it simply replaces the application files and forces a fresh connection).
Let us know if changing the DNS clears that error message for you!
