Error with RoonOS 3.0 Reinstallation on Nucleus One (ref#BCN5CW)

Describe the issue

I've just installed RoonOS 3.0 on my Nucleus One.

Roon ARC was unable to access the Roon Server.

So I tried to revert to the production OS.

When I tried to navigate to the /Data/Reinstall directory on my Nucleus One is saw an entry for nucleusone (with no files) and a new entry for rock.

I put the instruction file in the data directory on rock. And tried to reinstall. It failed.

This is the error message: 'There was an error downloading the operating system. Please check your internet connection. {"status":"Failure","exitcode":31}'.

Where did the entry for rock come from? And how do I get running again?

Are you aware that RoonOS 3.0 is currently in testing in Early Access? Problems are to be expected. The empty-looking folders and the error when trying to switch back to production are known issues that have been discussed in Early Access and for which fixes are in the works. I suggest you keep an eye on the relevant discussions in Early Access and/or watch the Early Access > Software Release Notes so that you know when updates to fix this are released.

Thank you for testing out the Early Access build, and I completely understand the frustration of getting stuck while trying to revert your system. As @Suedkiez mentioned, the folder structure changes you are seeing are part of the ongoing RoonOS 3.0 development.

Regarding the specific error message you received when attempting to reinstall, Exit Code 31 specifically means there was a “Failure downloading the RoonOS update from the update server.” This typically points to a network routing or DNS resolution issue blocking the Nucleus from reaching our update servers.

Next Steps to Try:

  1. Navigate to your Nucleus Web Administration Interface.
  2. Double-check your network connection status.
  3. Try changing your DNS Server settings to a reliable public option, such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8), save the settings, and then attempt the reinstall process again.
Because you are currently running an Early Access build and encountered the unexpected "rock" folder mapping on a Nucleus One, I am moving this thread over to the Early Access forum category. This will ensure our QA team can properly track this behavior and investigate the directory naming issue for future OS 3.0 updates.

Yes, typically exit code 31 indicates a network problem, however, in this case the update server needs new rules for switching between nuc4 and nuc5 image models and so it looks like a network issue. @Steven_Wickliffe , sorry for the issue, hang tight we’re validating the fix.

I tried changing the DNS Server, but was still unable to revert the OS.

The DNS Server had already been set to 1.1.1.1, but Tailscale was enabled.

I turned off Tailscale and tried, unsuccessfully, to reinstall.

I changed the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and reinstall failed. Again with Exit Code 31.

I restarted the Nucleus One and saw that the empty listing for nucleusone was gone. Only the ‘rock’ folder showed up.

Roon is still working. So I guess there I nothing I need to do at this end.
