Exclusive mode on MacOS is changing device to mono(1 channel instead of 2)

Hi

I would like to use exclusive mode for my Adam D3V monitors. When setting that device to exclusive mode(so Roon controls the device). Roon is setting it to a mono device(setting it to 1 channel instead of 2)

So exclusive mode is quite useless with this setup. Having it as non-exclusive the device works fine in stereo

Good day @Hasse_Hagen_Johansen !

I hope you’re doing well today.

We’re sorry to see you are facing this problem.

Can you please navigate to the “Audio “ menu in settings and open settings for your device ?

You should see there an option to manage channel layout and select 2 channels from there.

If you do not see this option it means that macOS has advertised this device as 1ch speaker via CoreAudio.

In this case we’d recommend you to open “Audio MIDI Setup” app on your mac and set the speakers as you’d like them to (set it up as 2ch) and then restart Roon and try to manage it again.

Let us know please whether it solves the problem this way.

Regards.

Hi Alex

It is audio midi setup I have used to diagnose this

In non-exclusive modes it shows as 2 channel

As soon as I set exclusive mode it shows as 1 channel and I am not able to change it to 2 channel(as Roon has exclusive control - I simply cannot change it to 2 channels)

I also have a small audioquest dac I can try to use exclusive mode with and see if I get the same problem

But from my point of view(as used with Adam D3V) it seems Roons sets dac to 1 channel and I have no way to override this

Hey @Hasse_Hagen_Johansen,

Thanks for the additional info! Could you next test:

Try another app that supports Core Audio exclusive access, for example:

  • Audirvana (trial available)
  • Tidal app (enable Exclusive Mode in the settings)
    • Goal: See if those apps also trigger a mono-only format. If yes → it’s a Core Audio / device firmware issue. If no → it’s Roon-specific.
Inspect the Device Format Descriptors:
  • In Audio MIDI Setup, check if multiple formats appear when Roon is not in exclusive mode (e.g., 44.1kHz 2ch, 48kHz 2ch, etc.).
  • Sometimes devices expose both 1ch (mono) and 2ch (stereo) stream formats, and Roon may be choosing the first available one.
If that’s the case, Roon’s device initialization might be grabbing the wrong stream index.

If neither of the above help, could you please reproduce the issue and share a more specific date, and time, and from there we’ll review a fresh diagnostic report?

Thank you!

Hi

I have recorded a video. iCloud Drive - Apple iCloud

When using non-exclusive mode it works in Roon

Changing to exclusive mode you see that audio midi setup changes to the 1 channel output and I am not able to change it because exclusive mode works (you see that RAATserver shown with the lock icon

The reason I started to investigate this was because when in exclusive mode the volume control behaved quite strange that is. With full volume I hear both channels of the stereo pair, but turning down volume with the volume slider would only turn down volume for 1 side (Sometime though after playing with the volume control setting in device setup (Device volume, DSP volume, fixed volume) I cannot get anything output through the D3V speaker (unless I quit Roon)

Testing with Tidal - exclusive mode seems non-functioning in tidal(There is no lock icon in audio midi setup - will try later with audirvana trial

I have been testing from Tuesday 21 oct 8.50 to 9.05 CEST

Also. Roon will not startup and show it window the first time. I have to try to start it several times for the Roon window to appear

I have also now made a video with audirvana(where exclusive mode actually works) compared to roon

It seems like ROON is gripping the mixer for the 1 channel device instead of 2 (there is audio in both channels but the volume control is only controlling 1 channel and you can see in audio midi setup that it wrongly grabs the 1 channel device

Also the chipset in the speakers in aurdirvana is recognised as a certified ATOLL Eleqtronique device even though it is not

I have also just tried with an Audioquest Dragonfly Red

Exclusive mode works there. It also seems that it has a Primary volume and then a left and right volume like you see in the screenshot

Good day @Hasse_Hagen_Johansen !

Thank you for detailed description of the problem.

We’ve raised this question internally and will be back to you as soon as we have some updates for you.

Stay Tuned!

Regards.

Hi @Hasse_Hagen_Johansen,

Thank you for your patience.

Concerning startup issues with the Roon GUI: if you are using Tahoe 26.x on MacOS, try launching Roon in Rosetta mode instead. Or, if you have patience to spare, try launching the GUI two or three times. The failure rate on startup isn’t 100%. The team is aware of the launch issue and has a fix in #earlyaccess that will soon release into a public Roon update.

Concerning the channel assignment on the Adam D3V:

We’ve escalated this to our Partners team. We don’t have these monitors in-house to test, but we can see the device announcements and RAAT initialization in logs.

This USB device is not presenting proper vendor strings to Roon via MacOS- the strings are either incomplete or malformed. This causes MacOS Tahoe to treat the device as a generic class-1 audio device instead of a specific make/model (probably why other apps are recognizing this device as something else D3V). Switching to Exclusive mode in Roon triggers Roon to reconnect with the device. When this happens, Roon tries to lock the device, but the device status from MacOS is still indeterminate.

What happens if you force-quit Roon on the Mac while in Exclusive Mode and then restart? What happens if you try the inversion of this test, and power off/back on the monitors while in Exclusive Mode, allowing them to reinitialize with Roon?

I recommend reaching out to Adam supportdirectly to inquire if there are any known issues with Tahoe for this device.

We’ll watch for your response. Thank you!

Thanks. I actually think you answer pretty fast. So no worries

Ok. Good to hear that you do know about the startup issues(they just became very apparent when I was testing this issue)

What I have just tried is:

opening Roon, enable the Adam D3V in audio devices (it set exclusive mode automatically because I probably had than on last time)

I can then play audio in both channels(And I know from earlier that exclusive mode is in effect because there is the lock symbol in audio midi setup with the RAATserver process)

When I am trying to control the volume. It only regulates one of the channels(probably because the 1-channel mixer device is chosen - I don’t how that works in macOS). So somehow exclusive mode works for playback but not for controlling the device volume

Then I tried your suggestion of force quitting Roon while being in exclusive mode. After restarting Roon. And push play there is no sound at all

I have also tried your suggestion about pulling the power(and reconnected) from the speakers while Roon running in exclusive mode. There is no sound again

I also saw that in earlier testing that sometimes when I played with the volume control setting(device, dsp, fixed). I lost sound. And right now I don’t know what to do to get it back  (but at does come back after some time when I have not used exclusive mode and just used it through the macOS system output)

It works fine through the macOS system output, but I would of course like to have Roon controlling the samplerate and the dac in exclusive mode to not have Roon to do SRC to the system output

I have already written Adam about the issue. I have got a short response telling me that it could be quite a complex issue and they have forwarded it to their developer team

If you need it is Ticket 2387408 in Adam’s system (if you need to contact them and need the reference)

Best Regards
Hasse

Hey @Hasse_Hagen_Johansen,

Thanks for the update!

You can mention to them specifically that the device is not presenting proper vendor strings to Roon via MacOS - it may provide a good troubleshooting path forward for their team.

Keep us in the loop on how things go. :+1:
