Extracting analogue audio from Apple TV

Am trying to use Apple TV as an endpoint which works perfectly through the TV and surround system. I also want to use another couple into powered speaker in other rooms.
I bought a couple of different HDMI audio/VGA devices from Amazon but neither output any audio from their 3.5mm jacks. Am I just unlucky and they sent me two faulty ones or am I missing something somewhere in the set up? I checked the Apple TV that is working through the TV and that didn’t output anything either.

I decided to switch to Apple from the Google Chromecast audio devices I was using after this weeks debacle.
This isn’t about fidelity in those rooms as I have a decent system using a streamer and DAC.

JBL PartyBox speaker and an LG powered speaker which bother work with other inputs to their aux sockets

It’s currently set to auto, will try changed to stereo
