Rock v2.47 (build 1510)

Hi, sorry I thought I would get a chance to add some detail to the automated form but if I did I missed it!

I am trying to restore backups from a QNAP that died on me. I have recovered the files and copied them to the internal storage of my Rock. I can see the 10 backups with dates but each one of them fails somewhere up to 6% complete. I guess this is because the file restoration wasn’t perfect so all of them are maybe missing some files, but I don’t know this is the reason. Is there a way we can find out what the problem is? Is there some way to combine the 10 records to correct for missing entries? Is there anythinge else I can do? I can restore no problem from my most recent backup, also stored in the same root directory. Many thanks Mark

Hey @Mark_Bowell,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your report!

Unfortunately, Roon backups are not designed to be combined or merged, so there’s no way to piece together missing data from multiple backup sets.

Do they all fail at the same ~6%?

If you could, please reproduce the issue and share a more specific date / time and we’ll enable a fresh ROCK diagnostic report to investigate further.

We’ll also need a more detailed breakdown of your network, and how both your ROCK and your backup location is connected to your router - set up a temporary direct ethernet connection to both if at all possible, even if temporary.

Thank you! :raised_hands:

The backups are on the internal storage of the Rock which is running Roon Server, so presumably there is no connection issues and nothing I can change there to help? They all fail at different values, between from before starting to show a percentage to 6%. I have just run one now and will run the other nine after completing this message.

Hey @Mark_Bowell,

Thanks for the additional information!

This can be quite problematic, especially if you’re also hosting your local library within the same internal storage drive. Best practice is to store backups on a separate physical or network drive (such as an external USB drive or network-attached storage, NAS). This way, if your ROCK’s internal drive experiences problems, the backup remains safe on another device.

As a next step, I’d test out moving your saved backups to an external location, and test to see if the same issues occur - we’ll be monitoring for your results! :+1:

I have just attempted backing the files up from a directly connected usb hard disk and it fails in exactly the same way…

Hey @Mark_Bowell,

Thank you for getting an external USB disk setup and tested! If you could, please bring your ROCK back online so our servers can connect and request a fresh diagnostic report. This will allow us to investigate further and review more specific failures.

With that, can you also review your Roon Settings>Library>Skipped Files, and check to see if you have any corrupt files currently tied to your database?

If you do, please test out removing them, and attempting another backup. We’ll be on standby for your reply, thank you! :raised_hands:
