Fluency feedback

I’m surprised that… till now there has been no feedback at all about fluency.
maybe no one cares?

On one side, i’m happy of this new feature: for me, it’s quite important to have artists in their native language. In fact, i have edited many artists names in their native language.
Or, in case of different alphabets that i could not read and/or search, i have added the native name to the latin one, for example:

here the first problem.
fluency does not work on artists with edited name. for example, this is an edited name in my library:
Screenshot - 20_04_2023 , 17_23_50

while this is non-edited result
Screenshot - 20_04_2023 , 17_20_51

in a way… i understand this…
but that means that i’ll have to check all my edited artists (and it would be helfull a focus filter on edited artists…)

the second problem is on language sorting.
the previous result is with these settings:
Screenshot - 20_04_2023 , 17_26_28

if i select also deutsch (after english) i get as expected
Screenshot - 20_04_2023 , 17_28_48

but if i select deutsch as first language i get:
Screenshot - 20_04_2023 , 17_29_42

note: this is not the edited artist. there’s something wrong.

another example. this is a non-edited artist with deutch switched off
Screenshot - 20_04_2023 , 17_33_49

if i switch on deutsch after english
Screenshot - 20_04_2023 , 17_36_02
the english name has gone, why? english is selected. and i would expect that being selected more languages, sorted, i should see the first 2 languages available

i think that there should be an option to:
-select overall languages to show
-in the sorting scheme, i’d like to have the native name first ALWAYS (so, not a specific language first)
-customise the language for the single artist

Hi: there are conversations that might interest you over the Translation subcat

I think the issue here is not the translation itself, but rather the way the translation is displayed in Roon.

Personally, I also find it strange that the English name is no longer displayed as soon as I select German as a second language. And this even though I have roon itself set to English in the settings.

I think this should be obvious, and if it did, people would complain that it messed with their edited artists

yes, yes, it is obvious.

in my case… i’ve not done massive edits, as i said i’ve just edited basically orchestras or ensembles, to have native names, and some japanese, arab, sirian etc artists to have the native language name aside a more readable one (for me).
I’m just trying to figure if the fluency solution is what i want, and if it’s worth the effort to reset the edited artists…

I did not realise there are only translations, sorry.

My feedback about the Daily Mix. I do save a lot of them also I like having the native name written in smaller font on the artist page (I have only English selected) but daily mix is using that native name (or I did my settings wrong). Maybe a way of choosing would be nice (in my screenshots I knew the artist photo).

Here’s what I find very annoying. I told Roon that I can read Russian. Now, if I listen to something with a Russian composer, artist, etc. I get this:

It would be much better to keep credits in one language, if possible.

Oh that would annoy me (but I can see people that maybe would prefer that). Maybe there should be a custom setting for it. Daniil Trifonov I can get in 10 minutes but Hwayoon Lee in native not in 10 days

I would not mind if it picked one language I know and stuck to it, at least for the entire album, but when they go “oh, we have the native spelling for this one string, let’s shove it among all the others” that looks rather ugly to me. What if I said that I can read German and Georgian? Would it pull native spellings for every person with German or Georgian name?

It seems to me that the main issue might be the different alphabets here. No such issue with mixed German and English names  One could argue that native alphabets may be preferred if someone knows them, but I guess it depends. A Chinese native may well prefer to see Chinese characters for Chinese names even if some other people in the lineup have native names using the Latin alphabet.

I suppose you have English higher up in the preferences list than Russian?

Yes, it’s English first, Russian second.

It’s also inconsistent, IMHO, with the setting being “album and artist names” I see this for an album:

but this in Tracks:

And even better below:

Why is Rostropovich written in Latin alphabet on the top but in Cyrillic on the bottom? And Tchaikovsky is spelled German way in the album name, but in proper Russian in the track listings?

For that matter, the album name is in original German, but track listings are in English.

If I switch to Russian first and look at credits, Dvorak and von Karajan are still in Latin alphabet, but Berliner Philharmoniker suddenly becomes Берлинский Филармонический Оркестр (but still shows English information page)…

Maybe that most users are happy with the way things are and don’t need this feature so aren’t using it?

I don’t recall it as an often asked for feature request so was surprised to see it implemented. Maybe one of those features that Roon feel is necessary for commercial reasons (expansion into parts of the world that make this feature a good selling point)?

I’m thinking of my mum that has her iPhone in romanian how would she file a feature request in English

More users would be a good thing also for the existing users

Well there has been some hilarious (unintentional) use of Google translate in the past on the forum. One user in particular had some very long translated posts that were somewhat challenging to get through. Well I hope they were translated… :grinning:

ChatGPT is the new fast car (ChatGPT sounds like NASCAR)

There was some feedback in other threads and in the Translations and Early Access areas of the forum

Two parts of the forum I don’t access (don’t do EA builds anymore).

That’s fine, just saying that not seeing some posts (and nobody can see all posts) doesn’t mean they don’t exist

Big up for you listening to Om Kalthoum !!
What a diva and what a symphony

Maybe because there are so many things that are really buggy, like ARC (or practically unusable for me), and so now we have another thing that will be buggy or aggravating. Overall though, the idea is cool and I’m hopeful (being positive) that all of Roon’s feature set will be less aggravating.
