Hello @Glenn_Zeleznick

I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

Hi,

I just tried it. When I click on “Play now”, this message usually appears and there is no connectivity. It appeared this time as well.

Then I click once again on “Play now”, I get a connection after about 20 seconds, and it cuts out after about two minutes. This is frequently what happens.

Thank You,

Glenn

It happened at 9:17am, and connection was lost at 9:19am

Hey @Glenn_Zeleznick,

Thanks for the fresh timestamp! From a fresh Roon Server diagnostic report, we’re seeing a few different issues popping up.

The primary failure appears to be DNS resolution for the legacy stream. This is the first and most consistent error:

Error Connecting to live.wostreaming.net:80
Name or service not known

That means
http://live.wostreaming.net
cannot be resolved via DNS from your server.

This is not a timeout or firewall issue, it never gets an IP. This host is part of Audacy’s legacy Shoutcast/ICY infrastructure.

Roon tries:

  • ICY (Shoutcast)
  • HTTP
  • HTTPS
With and without explicit port. All of them fail the same way → DNS NXDOMAIN / resolver failure.

Secondary failure: HLS stream serves wrong Content-Type. When the legacy path fails, Roon correctly switches to the modern HLS stream:

https://live.amperwave.net/manifest/audacy-ktwvfmaac-hlsc.m3u8

This part mostly works, but intermittently fails with:

missing or unsupported Content-Type: 'application/octet-stream'

Do you have any issues if you attempt to use the radio URL directly, or in VLC?

This looks like a third-party directory that might work better as well:

Let me know, thanks!

Hi @Glenn_Zeleznick,

The Cox router will likely default to its own (Cox) ISP DNS service, which may be failing to resolve the address associated with the web radio station.

Some ISP routers won’t allow you to customize DNS settings, but it’s worth looking into your Cox router settings administration page to see if you can reassign the DNS service to Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1). This might not resolve this particular issue with this station, The Wave, but it will make Roon more reliable with upstream services like live radio and streaming.

Another option is to add your own, second router to the network and place the Cox modem/router unit in Bridge mode. This would give you granular control over the network settings for you to then optimize everything for Roon.

We’ll watch for your reply. Please note that without any response, this thread will soon automatically close due to inactivity, in which case you can reactivate it by simply submitting a new request here.

Thank you!

I don’t have this connectivity problem with any other Live Radio stations other than 94.7 The Wave. Don’t have a connectivity problem with playing anything else on Roon either.
Please note, a few years back I had this same issue with 94.7 The Wave on Live Radio. At that time, the station wouldn’t play at all. At that time, your support team was able to resolve the issue but now it’s back.
Perhaps you can look back in my history and see what your team did to resolve the issue?

Hi @Glenn_Zeleznick,

Thanks for the additional context — that’s helpful.

From Roon’s side, there haven’t been any recent changes in how Live Radio streams are handled or played. Given that this issue is recurring specifically with 94.7 The Wave, and that other Live Radio stations and streaming content work reliably, this points away from a general Roon playback problem.

When we see behavior like this reappear over time, it’s typically related to one of two external factors:

  • DNS resolution issues at the ISP level, or
  • Intermittent availability or misconfiguration on the station’s CDN / streaming provider, which can vary by region or network path.

As a next step, we recommend trying the following, if possible:

  • Change your network DNS to a public resolver such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and see if that improves stability.
  • If your router supports it, temporarily testing playback while connected through a VPN at the router level (or another network path) can help determine whether the issue is related to routing or the upstream CDN.

While this may not fully resolve the station-side behavior, it should help confirm whether the interruptions are related to DNS or network routing outside of Roon’s control.

Let us know if you’re able to try either option and what you observe — we’re happy to continue digging with you.
