Frequent roon core crashes

Roon Core Machine

ROCK on a NUC which i moved from sonicorbiter to ROCK about 1-2 years ago with successful use until recently
ROCK OS Version 1.0 (build 227) stable
Roon Database 79% of 51 GB available
Roon Server Software
Version 1.8 (build 970) stable but problem presented on previous build

Networking Gear & Setup Details

SYNOLOGY Nas in wired Ethernet network

Connected Audio Devices

Wired ethernet to Sonos endpoints

Number of Tracks in Library

Tracks number just over 110k

Description of Issue

It is impossible to use Roon
Often crashes when call up remote on Imac or on ipad or iphone
If able to play it will only last a few minutes before it falls over again.
I note analysis is slow and often stalls as well

Maybe an unrecognized library corruption?

Do you have a Backup to Restore?

Yes I did try that.
I have also tried reinstall OS.

Hmm, since you have Backups, then try (as an experiment) a completely fresh Roon library, i.e. without a Restore?

Thanks I am a bit reluctant to do that again as I did that with the issue in 943 and it didn’t help. I took an age to eventually get the 110k reanalyzed and had to be artificially restarted to do so many times when analysis got stuck

Ok, just blue sky. It’s what I would try.

Tagging @support. They’ll probably want logs on Monday.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it.
I suspect the logs may help as you say.
I may follow your lead with a new library in the meantime.

To get a completely fresh Roon library Restored, make sure you first delete the old one.

BTW - How much Ram is on the NUC?

Good luck.

What NUC do you run ROCK on? And do you use any DSP? Finally, is your music on the NAS or does the problem present with local (to NUC playback) or streaming?

The NUC is a MSI CUBI-N N3060 but I am not sure how to tell you what RAM it has.
I don’t run any DSP.
I can happily access the music library on the NAS to iMac running iTunes.
It is when I use roon to the Sonos endpoints that roon falls over as well as at rest.
I don’t use the sonos sinterface because sonos can only cope with a library fo 50k tracks. The whole reason I went for the roon solution

With 110K tracks anything under 8GB of RAM could be problematic, IMHO.

The specs I saw for your machine are 4GB of RAM with a Celeron CPU.

Your machine seems to be way under spec. I’m surprised it runs at all.

helpful.
I bought it 4 y ago from Audiostore spec’ed as running Sonicorbiter Nova software specifcially for the purpose but after a hiccup I reimaged it as ROCK a couple of years ago.
It has been good until these last couple of roon builds and given the noise from others I was inclined to assume it is the OS.

Is it just Ram or processor too low spec too?

Both, but with 110K tracks the RAM is probably hurting you the most.

thanks
Food for thought. I will see what support have to say. If it’s a system upgrade I need, I will need to take stock on whether Roon is right or something else has come along that will serve me better now.
I need the combination of multiroom access to my NAS library and streaming in a single in a convenient interface.
With my family, I am afraid that tidal and qobuz don’t meet their needs as effectively as spotify does and so the whole construct is compromised.

After 4 years, the machine you have doesn’t owe you any money.

If you stay with Roon, bite down and get an Intel i5 NUC. Any generation up to and including GEN10 will work

RAM is cheap, so get 16GB. Add 128GB M.2 for ROCK and you’re GTG.

I used to run my Core on a Turion II Neo N40L, which was a Celeron equivalent. I had a much smaller library at the time, maybe 20% the size of yours, and it needed 16 GB, and was still sluggish compared to a NUC8i3 with 8 GB. Furthermore, I have around 60k tracks.

You could try bumping the memory in your Cubi N, or as @xxx says, replace it with an Intel NUC, I reckon an i3 will be fine as this is good up to 12k albums, and you’re running at around 8k.

There may be another issue at play here. Are your Sonos endpoints Wi-Fi? If so, please provide more details of your home network include device models.

Thanks
I am grateful for the advice re upgrading ram or upgrading to i3.
I will want to get appropriate performance for cost but also future proof.
I guess upgrade ram is cheap enough to go that way first and potentially avoid a nuc upgrade.

My endpoints are all wired Ethernet connected Sonos. My house architecture made WiFi impractical.

Hey @Roger,

It looks like @xxx and @mjw have sussed the cause of your issues. In checking your system diagnostics, your Core machine is Celeron based and has only 4GB of RAM. There’s just no way that platform can support the almost 118,000 tracks you have on it.

However, I see that you also have an i7 Mac that you’re currently using as a Remote. That machine should provide a huge step up in performance. I’d give moving your Core to that machine a try.

  • First, create a fresh backup of your current Core.

  • Disable your Storage locations in Settings>Storage

  • On your Mac go to Settings > General>Core and choose Disconnect

  • Then choose Use This Mac as the Core

This should get you going again.

Thank you.
I will have a go at this as it’s a low cost opportunity to test out if is my NUC that’s the issue.
I wil then have to look for a replacement NUC.
