Describe the issue

I have been having a problem with frequent skipping. I also get notices from time to time that Roon cannot connect to the server. The server is on my W11 PC. Both my phone and my PC are on the same network. The Sonos Ray speaker I use is reached via wi-fi, also on the same network.
Please advise. I will have to give up on Roon if this problem cannot be solved ASAP.

Describe your network setup

Wifi connects phone, computer and speaker (Sonos Ray)

Hi @vvs,

Thank you for your report. We’ve taken a close look at RoonServer diagnostic logging that automatically uploads to our servers alongside your technical support request. Here’s what we can see:

The RoonServer disconnection events you’re reporting result from RoonServer itself losing the loopback interface, which it uses to connect to both locally-managed devices and the Roon GUI on the same Windows computer. This coincides with RoonServer losing an upstream network connection - backend processes that require the internet time out or return invalid responses.

On the Airplay and Sonos side, we can observe packet loss accumulating in logs due to WiFi interference. This eventually overwhelm the audio stream, which is unable to recover the missing data in time to buffer the track at the speaker itself.

A few quick questions should identify and remedy the underlying issues:

  1. Do you have Compatibility Mode toggled on for the Airplay Zone in Roon for this Ray soundbar?
  2. Have you added RoonServer.exe, RoonAppliance.exe, RoonGoer.exe, and RAATServer.exe to the Windows Defender safelist on this Windows machine?
  3. If you have any third-party network security or antivirus software, also safelist Roon there
  4. Try hardwiring the RoonServer machine and Sonos speaker via ethernet instead of WiFi to eliminate interference.

If you continue to have issues, please elaborate on the specific network hardware that connects RoonServer to the Ray and to the internet. List any managed switches, second routers, or mesh nodes.

The team will happily extend your Roon trial as needed during troubleshooting. Please let us know if you’ll require extra time. Thank you!

Please see questions IN CAPS below.

  1. Do you have Compatibility Mode toggled on for the Airplay Zone in Roon for this Ray soundbar? HOW DO I DO THIS
  2. Have you added RoonServer.exe, RoonAppliance.exe, RoonGoer.exe, and RAATServer.exe to the Windows Defender safelist on this Windows machine? HOW DO I DO THIS
  3. If you have any third-party network security or antivirus software, also safelist Roon there I HAVE ADGUARD
  4. Try hardwiring the RoonServer machine and Sonos speaker via ethernet instead of WiFi to eliminate interference. THIS WOULD BE VERY INCONVENIENT AS THE PC THAT RUNS ROON OS IS IN A DIFFERENT ROOM. I CAN HARDWIRE THE SPEAKER IF THAT WOULD HELP?

Hey @vvs,

  1. Click the Volume icon in the lower right corner

  2. Click the cogwheel icon

  3. Click Device Setup

  4. Expand Advanced Settings

Here’s a step by step on how to do this:

Can you add the same exceptions you’ve added to your firewall, to Adguard as well?

Any direct hardwire connection will be helpful, certainly!

Do I want compatibility mode set to on or off?

Hi @vvs,

Compatibility Mode should be toggled on if you’re using Airplay2 / Airplay 1 in a mixed setup, which isn’t necessarily relevant here. However, it may also help with certain Airplay quirks, so we want to toggle it on for due diligence.

Once you’ve had a chance to set the firewall rules on your Windows machine per the instructions in the posts above, please let us know if switching to a hardwire ethernet connection between RoonServer → router → Sonos Ray reduces the frequency of this symptom.

Yes, the issue has gone away. Pretty sure it was the firewall, etc., as it got better as soon as uninstalled the OS I had and installed the latest version, which has a firewall reset option.
