Describe the issue

I currently have a Western Digital 12tb hard drive attached (via USB) to the back of my Roon Nucleus+. This replaced a Seagate hard drive, which replaced a couple other Seagate HDs.

My problem is that the current hard drive (and the reason for replacing all previous hard drives) is that the drive frequently becomes unrecognizable to the Nucleus+. Removing the drive, attaching it to my computer, and performing chkdsk /f almost always fixes the problem.

My (ongoing, and now increasing) irritation is that this is occurring more and more frequently—every few days to a week. I am frustrated with being unable to access my stored music (the Nucleus' internal HD, Qobuz, and Tidal remain usable) without have to dismount, perform a chkdsk /f command, and remount the hard drive.

As this is the fourth hard drive I've had this problem with, I think I can safely say it's not the hard drive that is the issue.

Can you offer any suggestions as to how to proceed? The drive is again showing as not available in the Settings-->Storage screen. I performed a fix-disc command on it last week, and while it worked well through last night, today it is again not found by Roon software.

(I leave my Nucleus turned on unless I removed the hard drive for the fix-disc function on my computer. Nucleus and hard drive are plugged into surger protectors. The Nucleus+ has a hard connection to my Xfinity router. The only changes that occur to the hard drive are the periodic additions of new music, but the timing of this is unrelated to when the drive goes down.)

Is the drive NTFS formatted?

If so, you may be better off formatting it as exFAT.

Does this happen without an obvious cause like unplugging the disk while the Nucleus is running or power outages?

It’s the standard format that comes with the driven so I assume it’s NTSF. I’ll look for another drive, format it as ex-FAT and transfer the file folders to see if that solves the problem. Thanks!

No obvious cause. No association with turning Nucleus+ off (it’s always on). Regarding power outages, I’ve thought about that, but it’s now occurred in two different states with different electricity providers, and while possible, there have been no outages I’m aware of and no blinking times on any clocks in the mornings. Also, the times I unplug the hard drive (for computer chkdsk /f function) occur after the problem has already recurred, and I always turn off the Nucleus first. Thanks for helping.

Interesting. NTFS really shouldn’t get inconsistent just like that. Are you sure the drive is healthy?

I assume it is healthy. It is less than eight months old. It is also the identical problem that plagued the last three (Seagate and WD) hard drives that I replaced, thinking they were perhaps going out on me.

That’s quite weird. No idea, sorry.

Thanks anyway.

Hey @Michael_Cohen,

Sorry to hear about your recurring USB issues! We’re unable to connect to the Nucleus to enable diagnostics for further investigation, could you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

Let us know if the issue reoccurs between now and when you upload the logs - that will be helpful in our search. Thank you! :raised_hands:
