Fuzzy matching in search for matching typos/misspellings

This might be a duplicate as I can’t believe no-one has raised it before, but I couldn’t find it when I searched this forum so…

Roon badly needs proper fuzzy matching in search, so it works with typos and common misspellings

Example: searching for albums by the clarinetist Anthony McGill
First attempt with a misspelling, searching for “macgill clarinet” returns nothing
Second attempt, searching for “mcgill clarinet” gives the expected results

This is particularly annoying in the iPhone/iPad app when autocorrect mangles the search terms

Qobuz, Apple Music, Tidal and probably every other online service in 2025 can do this kind of smart fuzzy matching

In that list…

The first one is complaining about searches being too fuzzy, different issue
The second is about partial matches not working (which has been fixed), not typos/misspellings
The third is this post
Not sure what the fourth is about
The fifth is about the search bringing up unrelated items

None of them seem to be about this issue, not sure why you posted this list?

No, it’s part of the question. Fuzzy enough for one person is too fuzzy for the next and brings up unrelated items. In fact, Roon does fuzzy search, that’s explained in one of the linked results, but clearly not fuzzy enough for you. So there’s part of the problem.

There are 50+ others in the linked search results. Search and fuzzyness is a permanent topic on the forum. Doesn’t mean you can’t post your request, but if Roon Labs reads it, they should consider the other 10 years of discussion, too.

By the way, I don’t think it’s possible to search for credit roles at all. In your second search, if I search for Mcgill alone, I find Anthony - I don’t think “clarinet” helps there (and it would be nice if it did). If I search for Macgill, I don’t find him at all, and arguably a fuzzy search should cover mac and mc, I can agree with that.

Perhaps I’ve misunderstood how Roon search is supposed to work and I should be opening this as a bug report not a feature request. I’m not getting any fuzzy matching for typos and misspellings. (Partial matches are working as expected, but that’s a different feature)

So, Roon support have confirmed this is a feature request (not a bug). My initial post seems to have confused you so for the sake of clarity I’ll try to give a better example of exactly what I’m looking for. This is something I think a lot of people would find useful, hence the feature request.

Say I’m searching for Chappell Roan but I can’t remember how to spell her name. The close mis-spellings “Chapel Roan”, “Chapell Roan” and “Chappel Roan” come up with nothing in Roon. Qobuz, Tidal, Apple Music etc all can intelligently guess what I’m looking for and provide search results for Chappell Roan. I think this is the behaviour Roon should have as well.
