Gray album covers on Windows machine despite network access (ref#NHAG6X)

What’s happening?

· My library isn’t working correctly (local/streaming, importing, or storage access)

Describe the issue

I have two devices, a Mac and a Windows machine. On my Mac, the album covers display normally. But when I log in on the Windows machine, all the album covers are gray. It seems to be a network issue, but my computer can access services like Google normally. Should I configure a software proxy?

Describe your network setup

Due to the GFW, I use a Clash subscription to access foreign web services, with global mode and system proxy enabled.

Hello @Nene_Ayachi

Thanks for the detailed info — this helps a lot.

It does sound like the issue is related to how Clash handles network traffic rather than a problem within Roon itself. Album artwork and metadata in Roon are fetched from external content delivery networks (CDNs), which may not always work correctly when routed through certain proxy configurations.

Here are a few things to try:

  1. Temporarily disable Clash on your Windows machine and restart Roon.

    • If album covers appear normally, the proxy is the cause.
  2. If you must use Clash, try switching to rule-based mode instead of global mode, and create a rule to bypass proxy for local traffic (LAN).

    • Roon uses a lot of local communication between the Core and Remote, which can break if it’s forced through the proxy.
  3. Make sure Roon.exe and RAATServer.exe are both allowed in your Windows Firewall and not being filtered by Clash.

Once you’ve tested the above, please let us know whether the issue persists — that’ll help us determine the next step.

Thanks! :folded_hands:

Hi @Nene_Ayachi,

Please let us know when you’ve had a chance to review the steps above.

It’s our experience on this forum that third-party network management software or stateful security is to blame when image downloads fail in Roon without any playback symptoms.

Exempting/whitelisting Roon’s services is the most immediate step you can take.

We’ll keep an eye out for a response. Thank you!
