Gustard X30 works as an end point

I’m a new ROON user. Recently purchased a Nucleus One and playing it through a Gustard X30 DAC. It was initially playing through AirPlay with less than stellar results. Both units are hooked to my network with ethernet cable so I linked through the network.

I had an issue with a track coming through with a much higher volume output so I set the software to match volume levels of all the tracks to eliminate the issue going forward. I then noticed that volume matching reduces the quality of the signal. Something I never noticed using Qobuz or Tidal directly. I’ll have to put up with that when using the ROON algorithm for finding new music.

In most cases, volume leveling reduces a track’s amplitude by the indicated level in dB to match an average loudness target, so if you quickly switch between it on and off, the louder one always seems to sound better - that’s just how human auditory perception works, and not really a reduction in quality.
