Long time Roon User. Having a problem with the stability of Roon and not remaining operational. Basically, it sporadically works:
Whether Im playing albums or tracks, it stops playing sometimes. I have to restart Roon or restart the computer. 5-10 times a week. When I go to play an album instead it loading up and starting the blue line (normally measures the timing on the track) just zig, zags from left to right. It will ultimately either just stop and nothing plays or maybe a few minutes go by and it loads up and starts playing.
Separate issue but, Roon Radio no longer functions. Used to be after a track or an album Roon Radio would start playing music that was similar. Now it just stops at the end of the track or the album. Yes, Roon radio is in the on position both in settings and when you click the icon next to the skip function.
Used to be I could leave my Mac Mini on for a few days and whenI would go to Roon it would start right up play whatever tract or album I selected. Or when it was in Roon radio, it would still be playing similar tracks. Now, I have to restart Roon, the computer or both just to play anything.
Im using a M2 Mac Mini (2023), on a strong wi fit network. Roon version is1.8.0 Build 1151
Ive been running this very successfully for many years now and I love the software but, am extremely frustrated as Im lucky if I get through one album before I have to start dealing with the above problems.
Ask yourself what’s changed. Router, ISP, cabling? Often a good fix is to change the local DNS address to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4. A Mac my have additional security settings which need to be enabled, check in System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options and allow Roon
First thing don’t use wifi. For a server app like Roon not a good idea. Any reason you’re running 1.8. It’s no longer receiving updates and is EoL. You on an upto date Mac and Roon no longer requires the always internet connection.
If your use Tidal then the api in 1.8 is out of date for what they require so can cause issues. Support mentioned this to another user recently on 1.8. Their advice will be to update to 2.0 and get a wired connection.
One of the major original motivations for sticking with Roon 1.8 - using Roon without a working internet connection - is now no longer relevant. The latest version of Roon 2.0 will also work without an internet connection for up to, I believe, 30 days. This is the same as Roon 1.8.
There is no argueing with the ‘get a wired connection’ part of the advice. A good WiFi connection can often be demonstrated to work but that same WiFi may not work the next day when the WiFi usage patterns or atmospheric and environmnetal conditions are different.
By contrast, wired ethernet is much more resilient. It is imune to all but the most extreme (really extreme) environmental conditions and it is much, much more tolerant of traffic caused by other devices on the network.
