Hegel 390 not displaying Roon on its display (ref#O86SI3)

What’s happening?

· Other – My issue isn’t listed above

Describe the issue

I have Roon app but can’t get Hegel 390 to show Roon on its display

Describe your network setup

I have iPad, Hegel 390 and use Telus.

Hey @Brian_Montgomery,

Thanks for writing in and for sharing your report! When everything is working, the H390 display will show “Roon Ready” only when:

  • The Hegel is connected to your network
  • Roon Server is running
  • Roon has selected the H390 as the output device via Roon Ready
  • The H390 has the latest firmware (this is critical)

If you head to Roon Settings > Audio and connect to the 390 via Roon Ready, are you able to see it properly on the device itself?

You also need a Computer to run Roon Server on.

Describe the issue

I am getting frustrated with getting Roon on my Hegel 390. Too bad I can’t actually talk to someone. Pity.

Describe your network setup

Hegel 390, iPad and Telus.

You need to run the Roon app (Roon server) on a separate PC or Mac.
Hegel can only act as an endpoint (renderer).
The iPad serves as a remote control.

Please don’t open duplicate Support requests. It won’t get your issue resolved any quicker and can hamper the efforts of the Support Team.

And as both @BlackJack and @Serge_Tse have pointed out, you need to have a Roon Server running in your home network as well as having Roon on your iPad.

Hello @Brian_Montgomery,

I understand the frustration — Roon’s architecture is a bit different from most streaming apps, so let me explain clearly what you need to get your Hegel H390 to show “Roon Ready” and play music.

1. The iPad app alone is NOT enough

The Roon app on your iPad is only a remote control.
It cannot run Roon on its own and cannot stream directly to the Hegel.

2. You MUST have a Roon Server running somewhere

Roon needs a dedicated Core / Server to run 24/7 in your home network.

You need ONE of the following:

  • A Mac
  • A Windows PC
  • A Linux computer
  • A Roon Nucleus / ROCK mini-PC(Intel/Asus NUC)

This device will hold your Roon database and manage all audio streaming.

Once the Server is running, your iPad will automatically find it and act as the controller.

3. How the system should work

Here is the correct setup:

Roon Server → connected to your home network
Hegel H390 → connected to the same home network (Ethernet recommended)
iPad → opens the Roon app and controls everything

When all three pieces are in place, the Hegel display will show:

“Roon Ready”

…but only after you have:

  • Added the Roon Server
  • Enabled the H390 in Settings → Audio
  • Selected it as the playback device
  • Enabled Roon Ready mode on Hegel
  • Confirmed the H390 is running the latest firmware from Hegel

What you need to do now

  1. Install Roon Server on a computer (Mac/PC) in your home.
  2. Open Roon on your iPad and connect to that Server.
  3. Go to Settings → Audio and enable the Hegel H390 (Roon Ready).
  4. Start playback → now the Hegel screen should show “Roon Ready”.

If you tell me what devices you have at home (Mac, Windows PC, or none), I’ll give you exact step-by-step instructions tailored to your setup.

Happy to help — just let me know!
