Welcome to the forum. There’s quite a lot to understand about Roon and many, many, options
from simple running Roon on your existing computer (PC / Mac) or building NUC based dedicate Roon Server …
Roon do sell their own hardware, but since the introduction of the new range (Nucleus Titan and Nucleus One) the are currently only available in the USA.
I’d suggest to start off have read of …
This will help your understand of what options are available and what best fits in with you (we are all different).
Then if you could indicate your preference, members on here will be able to offer specific tailored for you.
After the homework reading assignment @Carl gave you, can you tell us a little about your setup? What kind of network do you have (WiFi, ethernet, any switches available, MAC, PC, etc)?
Like @Carl mentioned: The easiest way to start would be to install Roon on an existing computer and run that as your “server”. Then use that computer, your iPad, and your phone as the “remote controls” for Roon. If you do this during the trial period there is no money to spend if you have the hardware already.
The next step is to decide if you want to keep Roon and how you want to run it. The rabbit hole goes deep, if you choose to chase the rabbit that is.
Download and install Roon on your PC or laptop. That will install two programs, the Roon Server and Roon (the Roon client). Set Roon Server to Launch at startup of your computer because it runs in the background. Give it a minute or two to get up and running, then click on Roon to start the Roon client. Go from there.
So I dont have to go out an purchase a Roon Nucleus (or similar)?
I have a desktop:
11th gen i5
16G RAM
I run Linux Mint 22
Connected to router/modem by CAT5
I also have a laptop with similar specifications running win11 (which I dont use… its mainly a back up) Its connected by wifi at the moment but I have enough cable to connect via ethernet
Yes - your Roon Server has been installed on your Linux system and the Roon GUI is installed on your iPad. Touch the Connect button to connect the Roon GUI to the Server and you can get started…
hello, I do run Roon on a linux box (although my main computer is a MacBook) through wine and the experience is near as exactly as it is on windows or Mac. I used this script to install it in case you are interested. GitHub - RoPieee/roon-on-wine: Running Roon with Wine on Linux
