Description of Issue

So I have a mix of FLAC and MP3 files (I am slowly updating the MP3’s to FLAC as I listen to stuff a lot). However at present most of the MP3’s won’t play. The behaviour is that about 70% of the tracks when selected show 0 seconds for a period, then skip to the next track. this means that at times it’ll skip most of an album and if I’m lucky play 1 or 2 tracks from it.

many of the MP3’s are ex Apple Music (from when the music match service let you download copies of the files to a new system ) so are all 256K vbr files with up to date id3 tags and so on. This is because I had an all MP3 library to start with and used the music match service to get 256K vbr versions of everything

all the tracks are not 0 bytes, and all will play correctly to any of my devices if I funnel them through Logitech Media Player to the same Pi3’s and Sonos devices - I do not believe these files are corrupt, have done new rips and had the same behaviour. I also cannot find any error messages to indicate anything is wrong anywhere

the TS451 has an SSD and a couple of 4TB disks (mirrored), 8GB RAM and twin, dual core processor and at the time of listening is doing nothing else.

what should I do next (and re-ripping all my music is not an acceptable option)

QNAP no longer supports FFMpeg in their OS which is needed for playback of MP3 and aac . You need to install it yourself there are several threads about this if you search for them. Roon on NAS is not supported by Roon it’s a special build by @crieke and he can advise on how to fix this.

Thanks @Simon_Arnold3 for the prompt reply and for sharing the lay of the land

Thank you both for your reply, I’d tried to search for tips - and couldn’t narrow the search as I was struggling with the search terms to use!

I’ll have a look for the threads you refer to

(and what a pain Qnap removing that! - I knew it used to work  )

as an aside, if these came from Apple Match, I suspect they are m4a or mp4 rather than mp3.
